yea, but still...I go to Germany around 2 times a year and people merely speak German, since they just don't know how to start an English convo....it's rather sad I think. I wish the German TV Industry would recognize the problem and start putting subtitles instead of putting German voices over the original vioces!

Haha, that dubbing is hilarious! I remember comming over Friends in Spain, and was like wtf?! when i heard their voices I also think subs is the way to go..

I agree that dubbing must have a negative effect on english learning in the countries that use it. It also spoils the films. I remember seeing "The Mask" with Jim Carey dubbed, while on vacation in Germany. That was a very unpleasant experience.

English is a Germanic language... and to be honest it's a bit of a 'bastard' language, because it draws on many different 'dead' languages...

I think the reason most people in Europe speak English is because their governments place high priority on learning foreign languages. So they are forced to learn it at school. English is such a necessity in the world of business that it would probably hurt a country's economic development if they didn't speak English to a high standard.

Unfortunately, our shitty government in England places little importance on learning foreign languages, because most people just assume someone will speak English wherever they go. Which is so damn ignorant and gives us people that make the effort to learn foreign languages a bad name! It really annoys me when I see someone speak English to say, a Spanish person expecting him or her to understand.

However, what I find most annoying is when I go to a foreign country and the locals assume because I am English I can't speak their language and so they try talking to me in English. The majority of the time, I can speak their language much better than they can speak English! It just makes me feel like I wasted 4 years of my life at university!

Anyway, enough ranting (for now!!).

Well, as a non-native English speaker myself, I can tell you English is pretty easy to learn.

Much easier than, say, Russian or German, which are very difficult! and somewhat easier than French and Spanish, which are relatively simple but still have some verb inflections.
