i was also looking into the nikon d50 and olympus evolt 500 but decided on getting the one that costed a little more (rebel xt) because the reviews were much better on it. but i ended up buying the rebel xt for about the same price as the d50 and even less than the e500.
now i can see why canon slr's are at the top of the market. the rebel xt is just the entry level dslr...imagine the 5d or 1d.
