so technically inorder for you to not have those problems you'll have to fork over an additional $100 to service a product that you've already paid $300 for? I don't see how that isn't a scam? I mean $300 for a piece of hardware that should already be worth the value, not an additional cost to cover it.

I'm definitely anti-ipod especially when people promote these additional warranty plans.

Why would you even offer up such a warranty plan? Is the product not designed to last past 6months? 2years? 3 years? Then why charge $300 for the initial piece of hardware? It doesn't make sense to me, I don't know about you but $300 is a nice chunk of money to invest in something that has been designed much better by various companies.

i still think it's a scam.

Actually, its a marketing tactic backed by patented product abilities. No one can replicate the product usage since almost all ipod characteristics have been patented by Apple. The scroll wheel etc, so no one can replicate the superb usability. But in order for Apple to get the MOST out of the product, there has to be a high turnover of sales for the actual product. Best way to do that is to release it with a common defective attribute like a battery. Now you tell me how long our industry has dealt with rechargable batteries?

From a broad perspective, it's a genius idea by Apple. Yes I say genius because it's basically driven their company to the front of the lines. Apple's computer revenue line is not nearly close to generating money for the company like the ipod has.

Circling back to the topic of this thread...the whole "Should I Buy an ipod" pretty much tells a lot about the person and their choice. Most likely they'll buy an ipod and be amongst the rest of the cult world. There's a small percentage that they'd take someones advice and purchase an alternative product, I just don't see why current ipod owners feel the need to "glorify" the product when in fact it's a P.O.S that cost you arms and legs.

I like my money, I don't believe I need to give $300+ for something like that. And even worse, Manhattan is the commuter city, what a market for them to hit, ever one who rides the train is a potential customer or should I say potential cult recruit.

ANTI-IPOD ALLIANCE!

Agree - you really dun need a video ipod cos ull never watch a movie in that small stupid thing. Ipods are way too overpriced. They are just pretty looking mp3 players at the end of the day...Apple's brilliant marketing strategy..

Get the nano which has enough memory and is smaller. Rocks + has value for money imo.

That's an idea.

I think his extended warranty was a best buy one, and that's what I was talking about.

Best Buy and other stores like it will almost always offer those scam warranties. But if Apple sells that warranty it's still a scam too.

Don't fall for it.

btw those extended warranties aren't necessarily scams... they usually cover almost everything that could ever go wrong with your item. even if you happen to break it yourself, you can still get it fixed/replaced. they're meant to cover much more than the original manufacturers warranty, and for a longer period of time.

i bought a 3-year extended warranty for my Nikon camera because i knew i'd be using it in situations where it could easily break. while i was on vacation i dropped my camera and the LCD screen stopped working. it would've cost me a lot to get it fixed, but since i had the warranty i got a brand new camera without having to pay anything. the warranty itself cost me $89, so it was definitely worth it.

plenty of electronic devices start having issues and problems over the course of time, so extended warranties are sometimes a really good idea if you know your item is going to be getting a lot of use and abuse.

on topic: i have a 30GB iPod video and i love it.

I was fortunate to get one of these before they stopped selling them in the US. I've had my iRiver for god knows how long and its still chuggin. Would recommend this if you live outside of the US. But I haven't looked at any of the other new spawning mp3 players though, so I don't know where iRiver stands nowadays...

Do you use itunes at all?

That's the only real incentive for me to buy an ipod.
