In the US, the 1986 "crack house law" actually being successfully enforced killed the rave scene. I can't remember the specific case at the moment but government officials slapped the crack house law on a big rave down here and that set a precedent for most of the southern states. After the EDC in Texas was shut down several hours prior to the event....well....not many promoters attempted to host a rave.

The scene has changed and most seem to act differently now. but the rave vibe still lives on...just in a different setting with newcomers or those old timers that still have the spirit. A lot of people try to act like they were never a part of that scene and look down on those who were...IMO that's why the vibe isn't as "thick" as it was back then. Most of the club-goers nowadays don't let loose like they used to...or newcomers don't know what it's like to lose themselves in the music. It's hard to get new enthusiasts into the scene when the vibe isn't what it used to be...

/end rant & my 2 cents

The rave scene is far from dead my friend. I'm actually going to a gathering next weekend at a top secret location in the woods. Its in the state of Maine and has some west coast headliners. It seemed like things started slowing down in the U.S. after the R.A.V.E. Act happened mostly out of fear but the scene has been gaining a lot of momentum again recently, especially in California and in the other southwest states. You can pretty much still find something underground to do in most major cities in the U.S. I believe although there has been a couple of major cities where it seems to have died or has been pushed into a club scene only because its hard to get the permits or people are just too scared to do something without a permit.

I do miss the day (1995 and before) when I would go to a gathering every weekend and I never knew where the party was going to be. It was in a wharehouse a lot of the time and you would have to wait until just a couple of hours before to get the full info. For awhile there I was going to a new wharehouse every weekend. I really miss those huge systems vibrating and rattleing those wharehouse walls and windows.

allmost two raves per week around here in sweden...
i would not call that a "dead scene", but then it's not genuine oldskool raves with all that "illegal" approach, but still it offers the about the same stuff as in the old days.
dance (and drugs for those who prefers)
