President Bush told author and Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor Bob Woodward last year that he was well aware of the camps and the atrocities. That, officials say, partly explains why Bush insisted on North Korea’s inclusion in the “axis of evil” in his 2002 State of the Union address.

“I loathe Kim Jong Il,” Bush told Woodward during an interview for the author’s book “Bush at War.” “I’ve got a visceral reaction to this guy because he is starving his people. And I have seen intelligence of these prison camps — they’re huge — that he uses to break up families and to torture people.”

So, only he can torture people I suppose.

I always wondered why the capital looks so deserted, than just found this:

Only citizens of correct 'class background' may live in capital, Pyongyang from which old people and pregnant women are excluded too. One of the conditions for visiting North Korea is that you are not allowed to go anywhere without the guides which are appointed by the State. Not only the itinerary is completely planned beforehand, any visit or trip needs to be completely endorsed beforehand and going anywhere without guide is simply denied.

Visas Overview

This is the difficult part. If you're from the US or South Korea you can pretty much forget about it. Other nationals may have some luck approaching the tourism office in the North Korean Embassy in Beijing; your chances of being granted a visa are far lower at other embassies. A visa, if it is going to be granted, can normally be granted quickly.

My mistake.

You're right.

Neither Bush nor Kim Jong Il actually torture people themselves. That’s what surrogates are for.

Well lets be honest here we all know the place is a dive in terms of human rights.

What I'm trying to say is that due to the lack of information about the current state of the place it is harder to judge.

We deal with China the who aren't alot better. Half the stuff in my room is made there, the same probebly in yours, does that mean I or you sponsor the regime. I supose it does.

But I suppose China only actually have one sixth (nearly one seventh) the rate of their own people in prision compared to the US. >SOURCE<

In Russia these days local officals are picked by the state "to save the cost of voting". No problems dealing with them.

In Saudi Arabia there is no democracy you can get your hands chopped off for crimes and women (I belive still) can't vote. And yet Europe is falling over themselfs to sell them arms.

As for propoganda for NK it is currently against alot of the world, while not at war it isn't far off in it's mind.

50 years ago, not that long. Even now my TV gets loads of adverts for joing up to the military "join the best".

The net point of what I am saying is that to single out NK is a mistake.
