i agree that tanguay has been more reliable than hedjuk, but there was a large chance he would have taken the avs to arbitration and won. it was a money issue and they needed a defenseman. also, i wouldn't say the avs are hurting more than any other team; there were issues before last season. as avs fans we should be lucky to remember two cups and all the playoff runs...I think Giguere will do well because Lacroix is telling him exactly want to do

If anything the league would likely center its attention toward different fans. Trying to win fans back with OLN or MyNHL is not going to cut it. The league is at a disadvantage with superstars from Europe or Canada. Ordinary American sports fans want to see natives not somebody named Jagr who is from the Czech Republic. Its a shame because there are a lot of talented players in the NHL, however, people here in the US want to see someone from Indiana or New York being successful. The NHL also needs to advertise individual players, not teams!

Agreed, just not sold on Theodore.

i actually just wrote a paper on the american sports fans and hockey...i don't think it's the international players, i think there is a problem with 99.9% of hockey players, with the exception of roenick they all suck on camera. nobody knows what they look like and they aren't exactly advertisers dream spokesmen. plus most kids don't grow up playing hockey and the nhl hasn't had a firm place on tv. the nhl needs new diverse fans because at the end of the day it's a business and fans equal money. oln and mynhl are decent starts...

also i read an article in this week's sports business journal and apparently this summer is all about exposure and marketing individual players which is a plus

Hcokey players are probably the worst to advertise yes, but I still think the NHL would make more of a profit if it were to advertise individual players. Advertising teams just does not work because most teams are constantly making player transactions. Personally for me I will always love the Avalanche but they just are not the same team without the likes of Forsberg and Foote. Sakic is the image of this franchise now but its hard to think that the heart of this team is playing for the Blue Jackets or now the Kings. You're right about the league being at a disadvantage but someone should be smart enough in the league and realize what makes fans like root for particular teams.

That would be an amazing paper though, wish one of my professors would allow me to write on that!

+1

having a rivaly between the top stars will also help

How did the NBA recover from almost being non exsitent in the league in the late 70s?

simply cuz of larry v. magic

how did MLB recover from the 94 strike?

sosa v. mcgwire

what should the NHL do?

advertise the hell out of crosby v. ovechkin

the nhl needs marketable star athletes...breaking records that mean nothing to a majority of america isn't gonna do it. i hate to say this but jose theodore with paris hilton is better than no publicity. the nhl has tried rivalries but it's doubtful how much they work outside the two cities...the avs and red wings was huge (i'll never forget vernon and roy beating the shit out of each other on the red line...nominee for best hockey fight ever) but that has died out with the messed up new schedule and the gutting of both teams. i haven't mentioned this but i HATE the damn scheduling...i'm NEVER gonna see the avs in freaking ny or anywhere close. anyhow, hockey is damanaged and needs more than just crosby and ovechkin, it really needs for them to be total sellouts, continue playing well AND partying with/dating people like lindsay lohan or whoever happens to be hot at the time and over course dropping some type of rap album or getting a reality show on mtv. that should help with ratings because now NASCAR is killing the nhl...
