What the hell? I thought it was stupid that you can't park on the street in Cambridge over night IN THE SUMMER due to SNOW plows...but this? This is just ridiculus. It's your own fucking property!!

This law deals with expanded driveways, not creating new ones though.

And are there really houses with no driveways at all? Considering in Canada it's impossible to get around without having a car, paying an extra 80/month just to park your car really sucks.

Family X has 1 car but no driveway on their property. They are forced to park on the street where they would have to pay for a monthly parking permit. One day they decide that they are going to convert their small front lawn into a "driveway" so they no longer have to worry about street parking/tickets/permits. So they get all the interlocking brick done and even buy some tar so they can create an incline at the curb for their car toi roll up on. Then one day I drive up and park infornt of this make shift driveway and they freak out cause I'm blocking them in. I say "FUCK YOU" cause one can't just decide to make a driveway entrance at a whim without zoning approval.

ahhh, I see, but if there already is a driveway there, and all they do is extend it a bit (not at the street, but like in the middle (like after the sidewalk....)) then they won't take away any extra street parking, and will in fact, make one more street spot available.

Coincidentally, I'm reading 1984 right now. Except in Canada, your own neighbour is the telescreen.

The majority of people I know that have lived in Toronto for a few years (my brother living there for about 7 now) have never had a car and get around fine. If he wants to travel somewhere, he rents a car.

And yes there are PLENTY of houses with no driveways. Even in Windsor.

I would still have a problem if expansion meant widening the driveway so two cars can sit beside each other. Legnthening the driveway is a whole nother story.

It also totally depends on 'hood you live in. I live downtown where the lots are very close together with semi-detached or fully attached housing. Street parking is valuble here and lots of home owners do not have a driveway.I think its selfish for a home owner to take away a spot from the street.

Anybody that has an existing driveway and covers their front lawn to make it a driveway as well is a stupid douchebag anyway.

You can't park anywhere overnight without a permit.

New Markham Law Makes It Illegal For Homeowners To Park On Own Driveways
Wednesday June 28, 2006
It's an idea only politicians could endorse - making it illegal to park in your own driveway.
But it's now the official rule in Markham, where leaving your car on part of your own property can result in you getting a ticket.

Local councillors passed the regulation Tuesday night, banning any expanded driveways in the city and issuing a warning to those whose parking space currently covers more than 75 percent of their front yard.

If they leave their cars on that extra width, they'll be issued tickets for the offence. And fines could range as high as $1,500.

Under the changes, the maximum allowed measurement of a driveway is the width of a garage door plus an additional two metres. Or it could be 6.1 metres, but only if at least 40 percent of their yard is devoted to green space.

And they'll also be tagged if they park on the street overnight without a permit - a license that costs at least $70 a month.

The plan is designed to prevent Markham from turning into a paved over concrete jungle. It's estimated there are at least 17,000 expanded driveways in the area, where parking is tight. But when council refused to exempt those who already had their space expanded, it raised a furor among voters.

CityNews first told you about the plan last April. And residents weren't happy about it. "It's absolutely insane, asinine," fumed Peter Sommer, one of those affected. "Nobody can understand the logic of what these people are trying to do."

"What was the big problem?" railed one homeowner as he addressed town councillors in a meeting, desperately trying to get them to reconsider. "Somebody sitting at home was complaining that somebody else's driveway was bothering them? Why can't they mind their own business?"

But from now on, they'll be minding other people's business. And it could cost them all.

Officials insist they'll issue warnings at first, before seriously enforcing the law in 2008.

SO STUPID!
