Well..

Frank Zappa is the ultimate high "rock" music in my opinion.

Other bands that seem stoner-ish to me..

The Shins
Morcheeba
M83 (more electronic that rock but.. yeah)
Widespread Panic
Oysterhead!!
Pavement
Radiohead
Rogue Wave

There ya go.

In the 70's it was stoner rock, in the 2000's its called hippie jam bands. trance music for hippies. If you want music that goes well with smoking pot, this would be the genre for you. sigh. Someone mentioned Widespread Panic already.

String Cheese Incident
Phish
Galactic
Keller Williams
Ben Harper
Umphrey’s McGee

thats all i can think of atm that i have listened to personally and extensively. its nice music and all but it has no balls. thats why its good for pot smoking. not a good drug for social interaction, makes you a total dud with conversation skills, makes you want to just sit at home and waste life away, premature ejaculation, etc etc.

No joke, especially when he plays burn one down. I had to see him live at one of his concerts before I realized he was black. From his sound I just always assumed he was white. Good tunes all the same.

I also agree that jam bands are jam bands and should not be called rock music at all. Much more folk and blues oriented.

Sublime is reggae. Ozma is Indie. Haha I know I sound like an ass but for some reason the term stoner rock just gets under my skin, even though I smoke a lot of dope.

not sure what this has to do with trance . . . but hippie or jam bands ARE NOT stoner rock.

Stoner rock is very slow, bluesly heavy metal with a big black sabbath influence taken to an extreme. Sleep is the ultimate stoner rock. Kyuss, Electric Wizard, and Clutch come to mind too. I probably like clutch the most, the rest is boring. And I'm a big stoner. Hearing some jackass drone on an A chord for 40 minutes ain't too thrilling, stoned or not. I prefer jungle when high, or maybe dub.

The mention of hippie rock reminds me of a joke though. "What did the hippie say when he ran out of pot?" "Why didn't anyone ever tell me the Grateful Dead suck?"

For the clueless out there (many of you seemingly), stoner rock is an actual genre, so don't just name a list of bands you think you'd like while you're high.

Majutsu's definition is right. I don't really listen to any stoner rock except possibly Cathedral, who were originally a doom metal band but who may qualify as stoner/groove metal nowadays.

You should check out Cathedral anyway. They're badass.

The Flaming Lips are very melodic. Check out "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots", haha weird title but awesome CD. Kind of quirky, dreamy, trippy and even beautiful at points.

I'm always getting told I HAVE to listen to Tool stoned in order to comprehend the true intricacies of their music. Um... right... If I can't get such dudes to buy into that theory whenever I throw on some ambient dub, why the hell do they think I'll fall for it as well.

duuuuuuuude, you have to check out tool, and i'm not just saying that because its my fav band. But its not stoner rock, i'd call it progressive metal

stoner rock:
QOTSA / Desert sessions
