omg. I so agree with you. sorry pkc

Same goes for the Wheel of Time. I fell asleep reading the first chapter of the first book and the thought of reading 10, well now 11 books like it, made me want to die. (i'm going to get slammed for this )

I heart Feist.

I found WoT bearable for the first few books, as long as you can deal with the massive LoTR-copy/paste that is book 1, but by book 5 or 6 it's so bogged down with subplots and minor characters that the story drags to a halt. You could probably just read 1 - 6 and then pick up 12 when it releases so you can find out how it ends, and not miss much.

Feist is all right, a bit typical DNDish, but for that he's not too bad.

Best 3 authors currently out there writing fantasy, imo, are George RR Martin, Robin Hobb (Farseer/Tawny Man trilogies, the rest of her stuff is meh) and Terry Pratchett. Not that there isn't other good stuff out there, but those stand well above everything else I've come across.

how can you bag out one series saying 'by book 5 its so bogged down with subplots and minor characters' and then say george rr martin is in the top 3 current fantasy authors???? what the hell is the point of his series? it just keeps going! with sub plots and minor characters! its so frustrating reading it

But his plot does actually move. Maybe it's not heading in a very clear direction, but at least stuff actually happens. Jordan, you can literally skip whole chapters or books and barely miss a thing because he weighs them down with inane crap that is totally irrelevant to the story in every sense. Not to mention his bland characters and repetative writing. Martin has believable characters in a detailed, believable world, his writing is very unpredictable in comparison.

I understand where you're coming from and I agree in a sense, he does spend a lot of time writing about characters I'd prefer he just skipped and went back to the interesting ones, but most of them are at least relevant to the overall storyarch in some way.

If you think Martin is bad with that, then don't bother with Jordan, he takes it to a whole other level.

oh please, i know lots of useful things! mostly nerdy useful things, but useful all the same.

to the rest of you haters, i can merely surmise that none of you are particularly bright. first off its silly to compare DL to the martin books, theyre pretty much a different genre. DL is pulp fantasy for adolescents, heroes V villians and should be judged as such. yes, they are cliched in the sense that its "pulp fantasy", but then again i havent read any other fantasy books that don't involve the same tired cliches, until the daughter of the empire series (feist) and the martin books. indeed, fantasy is pretty much one big cliche (though not as bad as scifi).

as the "group of heroes set off to save the world" archetype, it stands above any other fantasy excluding LOTR.

and, as for "poorly written" - what a load of crap. the first harry potter book is an example of poor writing.

oh, and what is very important to note, my DL defending begins and stops with the chronicles and legends. any of the spinoffs not written by weis and hickman are truly terrible. the original books however were the birth of mainstream fantasy.

pkc: agree with you on the original dragonlance books being the birth of mainstream fantasy and dungeons and dragons for that matter. still reckon raistlin is gay though.

taranis: completely agree that george r r martin is head and shoulders above other fantasy writers. robin hobb is really good, the first two books in the farseer trilogy are brilliant but i thought the third was abit over the top.

Yeah it is a little, but still a brilliant series overall, and she follows on with it very well with the Tawny Man trilogy.

Mostly I just love how indepth and believable her characters are, as you follow them across their lives.

its standard for me. if someone doesn't appreciate something that is of quite obvious quality (i do like plenty of things i dont consider quality btw) then i tend to doubt their intelligence. ie people that dont like BSG. cretins

I don't know, (comparative/subjective intelligence or whatever) when you look at stuff like-
quote:
The Dragonlance story is set over 300 years after the Cataclysm, an event in which the gods grow angry at the Kingpriest's arrogance, drop a fiery mountain

Wiki

...I'll agree about the sub-intellectual thing, because there's only a few thoughts going through my brain.
1: Unfit to breed
2: Mental age of 12
3: Lives at home

4:

There is no 4, I stopped thinking at this point.
