Actually, I do agree with you (as this is something I clearly remember from my first studies on sociology). The reason why I asked her "why is it that there is still considerable difference between individuals?" is because if there's enough proof showing the differences between individuals of the same gender, and this is a social construct, why would one insist on making this girls-boys division so homogeneously?
I wouldn't make the distinction homogenously. WHat somepsychologists call "male" and "female" thought or behaviour are broad generalisations at best. If one is mindful of the fact that there are no absolutes and that these generalisations will not apply to everyone - and don't apply to ANYONE in an abslute sense, then they can be a useful tool for helping u analyse communication problems.
There are theories that the differences are biological... like all that stuff about boys preferring competitive games, and girls preferring empathetic games... and foetuses exposed to larger quantities of testosterone in the womb developing less inner-ear hair receptors (hence - girls are better listeners) et... Personally I find any arguments relating to inborn personality traits somewhat tentative and dubious (probably partly due to my staunch desire to believe in free will). I think these differences come about for the most part from social conditioning from a young age.
This article is kinda on-topic. It's about SImon Baron-Cohen's study of autism, and relates to general differences betwen male and female thinking - autism, in his opinion, being "a case of the extreme male brain": http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-3207.html

How to confound pattern recognition algorithms. A Treetease by me
The First:
Expose it to several patterns simultaneously.
The Second:
Limit exposure of the algorithm to only a specific subpattern.
The Third:
Is to have a seemingly repeating pattern that then shifts with time.
The first defeats the algorithm because it can not reconcile the multiple patterns into one. The second and the third because the algorithm is believed to be so accurate for so long that it is slow to reinterpret new data rather than placing it into a pre-existing pigeon hole.

Of course my personal favourite ploys are to
a) use one symbol to represent multiple things
b) use multiple symbols to represent one thing

Girls = crazy.

lol thread closed.
my favorite thing to point out is the way women are such detail oriented creatures, as opposed to the simple minded, carefree men.
my ex and i are a perfect example...haha i love using this example, i've posted it before.
[guy] Are you almost ready?
[girl] Yea 10 minutes (that really means 20)

That was great. Like a MC Escher pattern come to life. And the hypnotic song multiplied the effect.

hmm.... I'm going to read a bit more on the biological differences, although from what I've read, as these theories often seemed to be ad hoc ones.

I can totally relate to that (my girlfriend hates my carefree way of doing things), even though my father tends to lie on the female side of this conversation as well (and he also hates my carefree way of doing things ).

well of course you can spot out commonalities in behaviors across genders, but at what point does that become significant? fark if I know.
