IMO German trance = PVD's trance. Perhaps his style is unique, but he's the famous German trance dj. Another point is what one understand as German trance. But that's my point of view.
That's what I call the German paradox.
Paul van Dyk is the most famous DJ who just happens to be from Germany, yet the German trance scene and music is completely different. Take, for example, Tunnel Trance Force, labels like Axwax, Illuminate, etc.
I'm not German, but based on my musical experience I'd say that Paul van Dyk does NOT represent German trance.

As a german I have to agree with Eugene. PvD does not represent the type of trance that is being played/produced in Germany. I don`t even think that artists like Dumonde or Cosmic Gate (which I both love btw!) really represent the trance that is typical german, altough it could be the style of the future for trance in germany but that`s another topic.
Someone on this forum once said: The Germans are the only ones who call techno hardtrance.
There`s a lot of truth in that statement.

for me german trance are dj's like talla 2xlc, dj wag, dumonde, scot project
There are so many differences between each and every single dj out there. And they all play bits of all different styles in their sets. Tiesto and Pvd both mostly play uplifting trance. To just say one is uplifting and other is blah blah blah, doesn't say much.... IMO

PVD's style = Electronica
Tiesto's style = Boring somewhat called "progressive" and nice trance from time to time...
both of them have their 'own style' and qualities...
both make me move on the dancefloor....and both take me away on a journey each and every time..
i saw Tiesto 2 days ago. in sydney.
he played amazng uplifting trance....one of the sets of the year, 'So Far"...... brilliant hearing Southern sun "LIVE" *cries*
i think it depends on their 'mood' and what club they are playing @ and also, a major factor, the "crowd reaction"
ive heard BOTH play harder, more driving. and at other times, more melodic and progressive etc etc...
I love Tiesto and PvD. Each have their own style which is very unique.
Tiesto tends to play/produce more uplifting/epic style trance.
PvD tends to play/produce more dreamy/floorfiller style trance.
But they both own what they do, so more power to both of em'.

Well like everyone keeps repeating they do have different styles and they probly are two of the best. PVD plays less progressive than Tiesto, but they both definitely know how to work a set. Neither of their sets are even close to boring. Nevertheless, PVDs mixing is much better though, in my opinion the closest thing to perfect. He has this mixing style that sets him aside from almost everyone else. I cant quite point my finger on what he does differently.....but if someone knows please let me know!!!
