i'm a native english speaker and i always took it for granted but i just paused my tongue in the position for the a and e in bad and bed and there's a very minute difference

its fun to exercize the muscles around there you rarely use. i took chinese a few years back and i'm pretty good with accents but its weird how some of the sounds you can make i would never use in english
the chinese 'r' sound is very different in form than the way english speakers make the sound, hence all the whole chinese people not being able to say their r's, they just say it very differently, about halfway between our 'r' and our 'l'

terrible movie, but had one fuckin hilarious moment. they were planning a suprise attack or sabotage or something, and one of weird al's friend guys is some japanese guy. so weird al tells him to hide in this closet and wait till the guy walks by then jump out and attack him. lol so he closes the door and its a supply closet. so when he ambushes the guy, he jumps out and yells "SUPPLIES!"
