There are actually are a few arrangement tutorials in the sticky anyway. I was apprehensive about including them, too, but I figured that they weren't too cookie-cutter, and I'd end up wasting a lot of time anyway if I started seriously evaluating tutorials as opposed to just aggregating them.

Still, I agree with Allied that "step-by-step" tutorials or videos wouldn't be such a great addition. I think that the type of people they are likely to help are also the type of people who are least likely to contribute their own ideas, and although this may make me sound like a pompous ass, I'd rather weed out rather than encourage the people who are SO lost that they can't even come up with a basic outline of a tune, let alone any technical elements.

I don't know, it just strikes me as someone who wants to make lasagna but can't figure out how to boil the water. I'm not calling these people stupid, I understand that not everyone is naturally good at everything (my Dad seriously cannot boil the water), but if you need to see a video of how to boil the water then you're just not cut out to be a cook. We're willing to give you the recipe and even the preparation instructions, but what you're really asking us to do is prepare the entire thing ourselves and hand it off to you just before it goes in the oven, so you can be the one to put it in the oven and say you made it. And even then we have to tell you exactly what settings to use on the oven. It's not fair to us and, truthfully, it's not fair to yourself either.

Maybe I'm off-base. Who knows. At any rate, although I don't claim to speak for Allied or anyone else, I still think that a suggestion like "find more tutorials" is unfair to the mods and a touch rude. Moderators aren't teachers or data-miners - it's a public forum, content is supposed to be submitted by members. Otherwise why allow people to post at all, why not just have a web site with an e-mail feedback form?

I'm sorry it appeared that way. I did not mean to suggest that the mods go find tutorials and that wasn't my intent at all. I have been actively trying to find some video tutorials myself for people I know who want to begin making trance. I'm trying to find content that would help them the most and save them some time. This thread was requesting suggestions and I gave my suggestions in order to help the community. If you change your mind and want me to give you the videos I've found, let me know.

I really do appreciate all that the mods have done here. Thank you

No, I think you are missing the point. We are stating that we don't really have any use for the sort of "step by step" tutorials you are looking for. You want trance by numbers and we don't think that will help anyone.(Speaking on behalf of the community here) Best bet is to have a rough idea of what you want to do, get the hardware/software necessary to do what you need to do and use tutorials/instruction manuals along the way in order to faciliate the process. It's arguably way too easy to make trance anyways and a step by step beginners guide won't really help you in the long run I don't think. The structure of todays trance is very easy and to map it out yourself, put some on, grab a pen, start counting beats and drawing it out on a piece of paper. It's a good way to get a 'visual' of what's going on and will help your mind think. I used to have huge structure issues and have since resolved the majority of them just by counting, understanding, and attempting to be creative within a general structure. This does not however mean I advocate copying the structure of any tunes, I just think it helps one gain a bit of perspective.

None of this however, has anything to do with us not wanting to share our knowledge/tutorials. We would love to see the videos you've found and will gladly add them to the main sticky if they seem appropriate.

I completely agree with you about teaching structure.

The main reason I have been searching for tutorial videos and encouraging people to make them is because there are very gifted musicians with extreme reading dissabilities. This dyslexia is a great burden to them and videos would be a godsend.

The recipe is insufficient for people with reading dissablities. There is much ambiguity and frustration when reading a manual and it includes work and I mean this for someone without a dissablity. Please immagine what it is like for someone with dyslexia. Videos are better, and some of these people who watch these videos are cut out to be producers of trance.

great, I hope it helps a lot of people. I think we would be surprised if we did a study on how many electronic music producers are able read music. Sure, there may not be many with dyslexia, but to me, every person is worth helping if they want help and I'm glad you agree by wanting to add these videos to your list. Thanks

I dont think videos help much because in the end your gonna put your own twist on everything , everyone here could make a how to video

but again everyone would want to do something different use a different synth ,deifferent sequencer ,make a different kind of trance so you cant please everyone.
