judging by reviews on various sites, abletonlivedj.com etc I read a few negative reviews before the software update had come out for the mixer, the update promises to have had fixed some minor issues then I never heard from these people again, on the other hand other 3D users are extremely happy with it.

The only real serious problem on mine is if you use the soundcard on it via hooking a laptop up to it and then you disconnect the laptop from the 3D while it is in use, the cue buttons freeze and you can't use them.

You have to turn it off and turn it on. I'm sure they can fix this with a firmware update.

Besides that, it is rock solid.

Does it connect using firewire (400/800) or only USB?
Also curious to know how the x-fader works when using it for ableton. As far as I'm aware (I don't have a copy) the x-fader only has L-C-R option for mixing between 2 channels in the software. If you use the xone xfader, does this in any way alter to five a smoother cross between the two selected channels?

Cheers

Does anyone know if you can connect two laptops to one 3D? Say use the left half for one and the right half for the other?

It is a bit of a kludge, but yes you can. Hook up the USB cable to the laptop you want the audio being streamed from. It will transmit MIDI messages to whatever program you have set up to accept midi program messages.

Then get a MIDI interface for your second laptop. Route the midi out from the Xone:3d to the midi in of this second laptop's midi interface. Now it is just a matter of assigning midi controller messages in your second laptop's software program to accept midi messages being sent through the midi out of the 3D.

You can even have two sources of audio routed through the mixer (one through USB supplied by computer one, and other other through audio inputs - LINE IN - from other other laptop's audio output).

Kludgy, lots to set up, but theoretically doable.

I know Live 6 added some better crossfader options (in the SW).

Does the crossfader even transmit midi? I know the rest of the mixer does NOT.

yes, the mixer's crossfader transmits MIDI.

Live 6 has selectable crossfader curves now too for more customization of your sound when crossfading.
