hilarious. That bit about Shakespear was brilliant, and now he is apparently not to be taken as a part of history yet his works while in most cases are considered pure fiction it is THE CONTENT OF THE FICTION THAT MAKES IT A REPRESENTATION OF THE CULTURE, SOCIETY and TIME that it was written . Example: Merchant of Venice, Fiction; yet it has been used as a context for anti-semetic beleifs of the period.
Back to Carlin, first I dont like his politics, clearly you do, I think he is witty, yet I also think that he is offensive in that he has talent that is followed by lemmings who cant see the power that he weilds. Frankly I watch ALOT of comedy. I always have. Nowadays, I have seen that comedy is not as much about humour so mcuh as it seen as social/political/environment (in this case) commentary, which puts people like carlin in a realm that includes humour and commentary. It is the commentray part that I dont care for, and I am entitled to beleive that.
Thanks for the coles notes on carlins wit on Environmentalism, I enjoyed it.
But first he is not the first to do it, he just does the humour part of it well. that is why he is a comedic legend. Recently Dennis Miller did a piece in his most recent show that destroyed the idea of global warming; basically saying that he doesnt beleive that it is real, at all...it is a human construct, sign of liberal thinking. He was, unlike carlin, not even funny about it and he essentially lied throught the peice. Comedians as of late seem to be using their comedic license as a means to prove whatever side of the American political spectrum they wish to promote.
The set was funny, but his take on it, is in my opinion the last thing americans need to think is funny, and saying that this is mockery is secondary to the problem I have with it in the first place. He is mocking a very real issue, and then mocking the very people who actually care about it. when it should be the opposite in both cases. I got the mockery, it was who he was mocking that I had the entire problem with. |
What are you stupid? I said if you take Shakespearean plays to be LITERAL history (KEY NOTE WORD: LITERAL), its like taking the opinions of comics to be the truth. There entertainers first and formost, and you take what they say with a grain of salt and with a different perspective then what normal people usually think of. You're so caught up in being offended by what he says, that you're unwilling to see that his message is never to be taken as serious in the first place and that no one in their right mind is gonna really believe environmentalism is what he exactly paints it to be. Were talking about the same guy who envisions Pay Per View events of psychopaths and murders in a closed cage that borders around two of the most boring states in America. If you really believe someone who speaks in that nature is taking something like Environmentalism as being a serious subject in his "commentaries" then perhaps they should be thrown off a skyscraper and land head first into a pitchfork.
As for Dennis Miller, he was funnier as a democrat, and lately has picked up the most moronic views as a republican. I dunno if he does it for the money or what, hes just completely whack and I wouldnt care to listen to him much anymore cause some of his stuff isnt really that funny. But Miller takes his commentaries more serious than Carlin, which is why they really arent in the same category of comedians anymore. Miller has his political talk show, and has inserted himself into the political realm/republican machine for some reason. Which is somewhat unfair of a comparison, because alot of comics talk about politics as a main selling point in their acts, Carlin isnt one of them, and to still consider Carlin as a poltical comic is far from anything but the truth (at one point he used to be much more political). Carlin speaks about world topics and about any subject he deems fit to make fun of, which is why he is more universally listened to than say a Miller or Maher.
If youre really that offended about what Carlin says, then he did his job right. Which is what Carlin has been doing for years and will continue to do so. Funny enough, that bit he did was from like 8 years ago or something, im sure if people really believed what he said to be the truth, there would be more idiots running around spouting his shit as the truth as opposed to repeating it as a medium for laughter.
What makes me laugh is that in your head, its not right to take light of real subjects or serious topics because...well...its not just right, and it may give the unappropriate view on the subject. Well sorry to burst your bubble princess, but not everyone is forced to see anything in one particular way, our minds arent built that way.
