no not at all...the first one wasn't bad for what it was. But two sequels? That's a bit excessive.

Anyway, I'm about to see Flags of Our Fathers tonight and every time I see a quality Hollywood war movie, it makes me yearn for the day when Canadians actually embrace some of our own history and produce a relevant war movie. But our film industry is quite lacking...

The WW2 film wasn't bad but neither were the three films of Ginger snaps. I enjoyed all those films and Canadians don't really make films about WW2 because they didn't really play any role in the war

lol...is that so? So 800,000 men in uniform (out of a country of only 11 million at the time), the world's largest all-volunteer army, nearly 50,000 killed in action, the world's third largest navy by 1944? Britain's major supplier from 1939 until 1942, phenomenal success in Italy, Juno Beach on D-Day (Canadians were the only ones to actually achieve their first day objectives), closing the Fallaise Gap, clearing the Dutch ports, securing Antwerp with the British, liberating Holland and Northern Germany....that's not a major role?

This is precisely why we need a non-American ww2 movie. It could at least clear up some of the ignorance concerning what non-American nations achieved 60+ years ago.

mm hmm...there were 3 main fighting forces in northwestern Europe from 1944-45 mate; American, British, Canadian.

But anyway, nobody ever watches Canadian movies outside of Canada so I guess that's why we dont' have any big budget epics. Instead, we sit here and whine about all the jingoistic American ones instead.

This thread is useless.

Like any country, those who don't know it can't fully appriciate what it has. Canada has a lot more than many others and it has exported internationally its fair share of great things. It takes more understanding of Canadian culture than most are willing to spend to get it.

I agree. We're not in the business of forcefully exporting our culture. But once in awhile, it would be nice to see an internal effort to expose some of the Canadian things/events/people amd their effect on the world. Making a Canadian war movie is but one example and one of the things, I personally, would like to see.

But is anybody really interested outside Canada?

Actually one thing that I have noticed is that the UFC gives Canadian MMA Fighters (and our leagues in Canada) their fair share of credit for some great atheletes. Hockey has the same kind of reputation.

I, for one, want to get to know Canada better. I live close to Canada and yet I don't know much about its culture. I rarly get to go to Canada and when I do. I normally go to Algonquin national park or thunderbay or toronto. Beautiful place and that is in only one state. But Canada should for its own sake export more films or tv shows.

well...province, not state.

We have our own tv shows and movies and such, but the problem is that it's very hard to have them "exported". Recently there was a production on Maurice Rocket Richard, one of the greatest hockey players ever - first to score 50 goals in a 48 game season, 8 Stanely Cups with Montreal, one of the best fighters in the game, etc. I don't think it was shown outside of Canada.

No American distributors are willing to pick up movies that don't appeal to Americans. How many Americans would actually go see a political drama about Stephen Harper or a war movie focussed solely on Canadians at Juno Beach on D-Day? I think the answer would be very few.
