So upon further reflection, this was definitely the best party I have been to in 2006 and probably even longer. It is so rare now to get a major techno headliner out to somewhere other than Guv or this is london - occasionally they happen at footwork but (in my mind) no one on the same level as Adam has ever played there.
There isn't a better space in the city to have a techno jam. I haven't been to 99 in quite some time but it was as I remembered it to be - bare bones, big sound, random people, etc. It was nicely decorated with candles and drapes (not too close together, thankfully).
I got there a bit late but was happy to see Jamie Kidd still playing when I arrived around 1. I had quite a few people remark how great Jamie's set was and it was an excellent lead in to Adam's set. A bit more on the funky, but still driving, techno side. This guy is definitely on the up and up and I hope (and expect) we'll see a lot more of this guy opening for DJs like Adam Beyer!
Adam came on around 2 and was playing harder than expected. I was really surprised. It was nice to hear some older tracks along with a lot of new material. I would really like to know where he's getting this music! I hope this is where techno is headed again...still driving, but deep and percussive. I would say he didn't go softer until about 5:30. He still maintained, for the most part, a groove to his set, never wandering off into really hard stuff for too long. Technically, there isn't too much to say about Adam, his mixing is always bang on and the transitions are smooth. Sure there was an off beat here and there but I don't know of a techno DJ who plays more seamlessly than Adam does.
The crowd was typical 99 crowd - ravers, drunks, creeps, weirdos - but I couldn't believe how many people from the techno scene Adam Beyer brought out that I wouldn't expect to see. It was definitely a rare show for toronto and I think a lot of people knew it.
The only downsides to the night were, as usual, the horrible bathrooms, the paint shit that comes off of the floor and on to your shoes and clothes, and them running out of water at 4:30. It got very hot in there - especially for those in costumes!
Nice to see all of the TAs out as always
Here are a few short clips of the night:

Wow, this was an INSANELY good night.
Adam Beyer threw down four hours of pure madness. From the get-go, he started tearing shit up with his classic fast paced, funked up percussive techno. This is the kind of techno I fucking LOVE because, quite simply, it makes me go absolutely mental. The peak hour insanity around the 4:00 to 5:00 am mark had me twisting and turning my body and flailing my arms and legs in such weird helicopter-like ways that I feared I might become unglued and parts of me would just fly off around room. At one point, simply dancing was not enough – I wanted to physically throw myself AT the music. It was that good. He was just pulling out track after track of dirty, filthy techno evil. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more demented, he upped the ante with yet another piece of electronic psychosis. Most of the stuff he was playing sounded new – I only recognized a handful of tracks all night. If this is a sign that harder techno is coming back with a new gloss, then I sure do like the direction this is going.
I gotta say, after going to a number of parties in the last few months that have left me kinda "meh" about the whole EDM scene, my faith has been restored, and this kind of brilliant techno by a master of the craft is the SHIT.
Nothing is better for totally losing your shit on a dancefloor than techno. NOTHING.

hello friends
first we would like to thank everyone for coming out on friday. We did not expect that many people to come and and go nutz for beyer. The main room of sudbury was completely packed and the sound was just amazing. So many people where smiling and just going nutz dancing. It was a very special night and a great lauch for our Platform series.
We are sorry about running out of water at 4am but atleast you could still buy alcohol Adam had a great time and is super excited about doing a drumcode event here in the future. He also loved the venue and wanted me to thank everyone for the great support he gets here in toronto and stated that this was one of his favorite north american gigs. On another note many people were unaware that this week was the last week of sudbury99's main room. The main room has been rented and will become and indoor golfing range in the next month as the lease starts Nov 1. In conclusion we are super happy that everyone had a great time and we had the priveledge of having one of techno's brightest stars close down 99 for good. see you all the future platform events that will be pushing the big techno names....
