Even taken as originally stated, he didn't say they were stupid if they were in Iraq and that only people who failed ended up there. He was saying that if you don't do well in school, your options are more limited and that Iraq, which isn't a place most people want to go, starts to become a more attractive option. Military service pays pretty well, even for a hazardous job, offers a good career plan, and gives you the ability to see more of the world. And it is still available to most people, regardless of previous mistakes.

Not the smartest thing, but if I were him, I wouldn't have even attempted to say it was an accident and rationalized it like I did, because it is reality.
