The only advice that I would give you, if you are learning to do trance/house/progressive or breakbeat, don't buy sample cd's for those specific genres. Look to diversify and bring sounds from other genres into it.

Trance plucks in a trance track will not get you anywhere... but who knows.. maybe if you are creative enough, you can make it work in a house track (??)

Here are my tips. Learn synthesis if you haven't already. Once you understand what a VCO, VCF, and LFO is, it's a whole lot easier to program or modify a sound. Learn to use a DAW to make your music. Learn to mix/record. It isn't that difficult to understand and once you learn mixing it is fundamental to composing a track.

if i knew what i know today id stay away from edm, and keep up piano instead.
