seriously though, lets make some olympics to make some money for the city!

just open a casino if Toronto needs money so badly, no hassle easy money.

I think Pierre de Coubertin would be rolling in his grave.

We cant have a casino! that might bring in tourism and evil people who might want to smoke! Those tourists might also get in the way of homeless people.

Cant have that in toronto the good now can we?

Now can we just get on with building the condos already? Cause you know its gonna happen

Economic viability has become a key factor since the '76 games in Montreal, when the city and province went so deep into debt, they were only able to pay it off in the last few years.

Let's face it, hosting the Olympics isn't about sport - it hasn't been in 40 years! Cities want to host the games as a means of generating revenue for city coffers - that's the ONLY reason cities want it. If the games only generate the kind of money that a large conference (World AIDS conference comes to mind) can provide, what's the point of spending on infrastructure that may never be used after the games, along with the incredible security costs that are involved, and the ensuing transportation nightmare that Toronto would have to endure, not just in the two weeks of the games, but for the 2 months before and after as tourists and athletes come in and out of the city.

If the return isn't worth the effort, why bother?

this is a very narrow vision of things where everything is calculated in $$.

You can't put a price tag on the constant world wide visibility of a city, there's no marketing plan that can buy you this.

You can't put a price tag on the stories and experiences that those "annoying" tourists and athletes will bring back home and tell their friends and relatives.

You can't put a price tag on the sportsmanship legacy that will stay with the young generation in Toronto, Ontario and Canada.

Or the sports infrastructures and others left for the city.

Do you get my drift?

It is something that every "world class" city should aspire to, and I know you guys in Toronto love to use that expression.

btw, the 76 games organization books were balanced, it was the construction of the olympic complex that went overbudget, the govt decided like any other infrastructure to pay it off on many years like you would when buying a house. They used the money coming from taxes on cigarettes, now that its paid off, the same money will be used to encourage kids to play sports and build sporting infrastructures.
