Give me some sad songs, Jay...

AHHH Leonard Cohen! Yeah, what a talent. I thought you were talking about a Cohen Brothers dovumentary. I've not seen that. If you're looking for some sad songs, i suggest listening to the album UP by R.E.M, it's one of my favourite albums ever and in my opinion their best work. Listen to At My Most Beatiful and Daysleeper. Some other sad stuff from the cd's i have lying in front of me, i would say you should have a listen to a band called James. Or Check out Blur, they may have a lot of upbeat songs but they have some amazing sad songs.

PLUS! The masters of the genre. Radiohead! But i'm sure you will already know a lot about them.

Yeah, fantastic band also. Got a bit shit in recent years, but a mighty fine back catalogue.

It is indeed, Morissey is well known as Ol'bigmouth though. He's by far the greatest lyricist of all time. People who disagree are either idiots or just don't get it, or both.

Morrissey and Ian Brown of the Stone Roses are two of the greatest of all time. Totally amazing.

Brown is a good lyricist but Morrisseys songs are more witty and more eloquently written than anything that Brown has, I'm a massive Stone Roses/Brown solo fan also.

Ian Brown is hardly much of a lyricist. The Roses shit all over The Smiths though.

It's all down to preference, if you don't appreciate the Smiths or Morrissey it's up to you, but theres no point in posting in this thread twice saying how hung up on them you are, boring dude, move on. Start a Stone Roses appreciation thread and i'll happily post in it.

I think musically The Stone Roses were better IMO because of Reni's drumming. I think Johnny Marr and John Squire as guitarists are equally as brilliant, and Mani and Andy Rourke are both average bassists, Andy Rourke is a shit drummer though.

But, The Smiths made consistently great albums all the way through their short time together, while The Roses managed 1 amazing album and 1 arguably disappointing album, and a small string of good singles.

Fair enough. I just found it a bizarre comparison, because I don't think Ian Brown has ever been rated for his lyrics, and common concensus is probably that Morrissey is ten times the lyricist Ian Brown is. However, despite that, I think The Roses are ten times the band The Smiths are. Not so much a Smiths bash as a defence of the Roses.
