Myspace is a fad. An extremely popular and revolutionary fad, but a fad nonetheless. The site will not last as it is indefinitely, the vast majority of members will eventually abandon it.
What we're seeing here is more people (teens and young adults) socializing via internet, and more people (everyone else who thought the internet was bad) beginning to accept this form of social interaction. With so many teenagers and musicians (and "cool people") on the internet, it's no longer unusual to spend a great deal of time in front a computer. Myspace just happened to be the site that made this so for a lot of people. Facebook looks like it will be the next big thing for teens.
edit: Digital cameras, broadband, webcams and audiochat/VOIP are also major factors. The internet or Myspace wouldn't appeal to many people if it stayed the same... silly me.
Social networking online is booming. It's cool now.. When I was in high school, most of the popular kids (non-nerd, not really computer savvy) went straight to sites like Sconex or Tagged. This was after 10th grade. Before that, I never saw any of these people use the computer for anything other than typing essays.
The internet is serious business... this really isn't surprising or hard to understand, it's more like a logical step forward. What did you expect to happen?
