I've only been to Leeds once, the people have annoying accents

HAHA that's true...I have family there and they all talk in a whiney kind of way...all nazal...and goes up at the end of the statement..kind of like every phrase is a question...they also skip out in letters when they speak..complete lack of pronunciation in the words. I can easily distinguish between leeds and say...London, but I can't distinguish between leeds and lancishire or manchester or newcastle as easily.

Believe me mate, if you can't tell the difference between a Yorkshire and a Newcastle accent, you obviously havn't spoken to a geordie!

By the way, wherabouts are you living now?

The most annoying accent in the country has to be brummies - Birmingham accent. Closely followed by Scousers (Liverpool), and then probably London.

Mackems (Sunderland) have a very whingy geordie accent. When they ask for a coke they say "quack". Yes, they are morons. They are also very nasty people, who you should definitely avoid.

Best accent is Newcastle, of course.

I could definitely tell the two apart but I would have a hard time actually labelling the accent. Geordie? Brummie? Scousers? I've never heard of that. I was thinking of staying in Bradford with my uncle but it sounds like I'm making a better decision with Leeds.

Right now I live in Hamilton Otario..about right in between niagara falls and Toronto, Canada.

Bradford's another run down area, like much of the North East.

That's where the racist riots took place a few months ago. You might have got it on the news over there, thousands of asians and whites clashed in Bradford. Cars got burnt, a few people killed, that sort of thing.

You get that sort of thing all over the North East. Avoid Killingworth in Newcastle. A lad in my history class who's part of a band says they got lost entering Kilingworth once, and sped out. Burning cars and a makeshift police station, as well of gangs of youths who you wouldn't want to clash with.

Poor areas have a distinct advantage; the beer is muuuch cheaper. They have a distinct disadvantage; you're more likely to be burgled/have your head kicked in.

The houses in Benwell, an area of Newcastle, were all being sold for £1 each last year. Noone wants them because the crime rate is so high that they virtually gave away a street of houses!

A few terms for you to get familiar with:

Scouser - Someone from Liverpool. Their stereotype is for being thieving toerags. People also laugh about them going "aahright aahright, caaalm down caaaalm down" all the time, and their steretypical image is to have curly hair. Watch "Brookside" to hear their accent. It's a popular Soap in Liverpool.

Brummie - someone from Birmingham. Renowned for their annoying accent.

Geordie - someone from Newcastle. Renowned for being unemployed, a heavy drinker, and a ruthless partier. In the 80s during the height of the unemployment, London football fans of Tottenham and Arsenal used to throw money at the visiting Newcastle fans, mocking our poverty and beer-drinking culture. As you can imagine, quite a lot of fights sparked out.

Cockney - technically someone from a specific part of East London. Although everyone else in the country just calls anyone from London a cockney. People in London don't like this, espescially in the 'posher' North and West ends of London. Stereotyped for being arrogant and unwelcoming. To a large degree I think this is true. Watch the soap "Eastenders", they're cockneys.

Cornish people - People from Cornwall. These people really are wankers. Many locals there think they aren't part of England simply because a river crosses past them.

These are just steretypes, I can't confirm them all because I havn't been to all of these places. Obviously, they are mostly a light-hearted joke, but in every country, attitudes are different in different parts of the country. As for partying, wherever you go in Britain, it is considered "sad" not to be out on a Friday or Saturday night unless you have a damn good excuse. Leeds is well situated because it is bang in the middle of nearly all the majort partying cities of the North. Leeds (of course), Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Sheffield. It's well situated travel wise, a useful place to live. If a 2 hour drive is nothing to you, then you can see a major world DJ every single week, funds permitting of course. Being in the corner of the country, I am not so well situated, since places like Birmingham are a 3/4 hour drive away.

Leeds is slap bang in the centre, so I'd definitely go there over Bradford any day.

Smoking ..umm..something Thanks Evil Bastard

Thanks for the tips...they shall come in handy I always love how the English have a good sense of humour. Although I am now in fear of getting the shit kicked out of me now..but that should be ok..as long as I keep my distance from sketchy people...and drunken low lifes, I should be fine. I always wondered why so much poverty exists in a country that is supposed to be more "socialist" in nature than America. Maybe I will be spared cuz I am the nice, gentle, kind (in the stereotypical sense) canadian. I don't want arrive in England like this and leave like this. I'd rather smoke weed than drink anyway, do you get good weed over there? Sure hope so.

And lastly, avoid ALL people from Sunderland. They are EVIL. EVIL!

I used to live with a guy from newcastle and i could not understand a fucking thing he said for the first 2 months. It sounded like he was a coke head from newfoundland or something.

hahahah all the girls i met from there were hot though and i had a fun time in newcastle.

Also on my second weekend ever in the UK last year i headed up to GK at the tele west center. Long story short being the dumb canadian i am i went a day early and it was 1:00 am when i got off the train.
I just remember having to wait about for the morning train so i thought i would walk about the city. Looked nice untill i saw these two beautiful girls chatting and then talking louder and then properly yelling at each other. Next thing i know they are fighting and not like girl fighting but punching the hell out of each other. This one girl jumped on the others face and the poor girls purse got thrown into the street.

So there I am just standing there watching all this like the forigen canadian i was. When a big group of guys walks by i was like ok sure enough they will stop this.
What do they do?

They nicked the girls purse and kept walking. After that i was like HOly fuck the english are nuts and found a hotel.

Ya so that was my expierence of newcastle.
I would go back though it sounded nice
