Tiesto is like the gateway drug into EDM, just like Oakenfold was for many of us.

My first real EDM CD was "Resident - Live at cream" by Oakenfold. Except it really wasn't live, and in the end Oakenfold turned out to be a DJ who wasn't technically proficient but had great marketing.

I can't fault either of them though, because at least they get people into the scene and away from the drivel that's on the radio.

Once you learn a lot more and delve deeper into the scene, you'll realize that there is so much more talent out there.

DJ's I really like right now:

Paolo Mojo - His tracklistings are always interesting, I always hear stuff I've never heard before. And his mixing is great.

Desyn Masiello - I really like how he blends various fun/funky sounds into a progressive thread of music. Great stuff.

Fred Everything - Kinda been on a deep house/funky housey thing lately. It's just so listenable and accessible.

All time favs:

Digweed - Loved his sound a few years ago, today he might be going a bit too minimal/experimental/electro/glitchy for my tastes, but he usually doesn't cross the line. I really like him because he's probably the most technically proficient mixer I've ever seen. As a DJ I can't even tell where he transitions half the time.

Sasha - See above. They come in a two-pack

Me! - I always play what I want to hear, at the right moment. How about that?

Through youtube.com and the DVD of his I baught (Magik) Just the energy he carries and the flow of his music drive me to want to do more with my DJ carrier. Even more unfortunate I haven't even been to a full on techno/trance venue as I am stuck in a wretched back-water town in northern British Columbia. It's because of him that I will hopefully be moving to a bigger city come summer though and grabbing a job at a much bigger club than where i work now. With that will come greater opportunities hopefully.

Edit: Sorry, connection goofy tonight. doublepost

Humate - GOD! Lots of amazing productions and 1 single set at Panama.
Paul Van Dyk - Energy 2003 set - energy? yes! yes! yes!
James Holden - For the old stuff (2000-2004) Clever sounds!
John Digweed - For ultra-deeeeeep progressive sounds (old!)
Armin Van Buuren - Great producer and annual ASOTs! (not the weekly shit!)

can't remember the rest now

i must say i used to love the funk that sander k used to bring... i remember i would wait and wait till a set of his came out because i knew it was gonna be great.. but as time passed he has changed his style so much that i am not really into his stuff anymore :/

i think the dj i admire the most now has to be morillo.. i think he enjoys his parties as much as the poeple who go to them.. he always has a blast... and well technically he isnt the best, but he can throw a party. i love how creative he gets with loops, effects, acapellas.... if im close to where he is having a party, im most likley to be there

no offense of anything... but i really can't believe some people call what Digweed plays 'minimal'.

Have you heard some of his sets lately? It's not a stretch!

Tech House and Progressive House, yes. Minimal, no. Maybe one tune every now and then, but not really. And yes, I listen to his Kiss show religiously.

But that's not the point of this thread.

Yeah true... I find his kiss show isn't really overly representative of what he plays "out". Granted I haven't seen him play live in maybe 8 months or so...

Regardless, it's getting a little too bleepy/clicky/electro.

And then he drops a bomb

meh, i used to love him back when he wasn't as famous as he is now. for some reason, he was a lot better technically. he would have a blast as well, and, dare i say it, wasn't anywhere near as commercial (not that that's necessarily a bad thing) as he is now. stuff like he would spin in the early Subliminal Sessions CD... ass kickery. same with Harry Romero. what is it with DJs hitting it big and starting to slip on their skill?
