I had my Dell fry completely because of a bad PSU.

I also regret not buying a modular power supply in my new build. The case is a cable mess because of all the unused power cables. Who needs two legacy floppy connectors and six SATA connectors?

I have mixed emotions when it comes to more expensive power supplies. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't go bottom of the barrel, but I've had good luck in the pricepoint at which I'm buying the power supply. The research and talking I've done leads me to believe that higher priced models don't offer significantly increased protection that is worth the higher price. Really the only time I've had problems with a PSU is when they've come with a pre-made setup, ala Gateway or Dell. I'm also a proof-in-the-pudding type guy, and the PSU is both popular and well rated (via newegg).

I do realize that it is a gamble, but I feel as if it's a relatively safe one.

I like the look of modulars as well, and when I build a new system, I might get one. However the convenience of wiring they bring is not worth the price in my opinion, at this point. I'm probably going to wait until the Intel quad cores come down in price before I'm ready to build again...at that point I'm sure a new PSU will be in order.

Newegg's ratings/ reviews are not worth the bits it takes to transfer them. I disregard them. Most people that post reviews there have less than 1/2 a clue.
