I heard this too, but I didn't hear that it was only for certain subjects.

I don't know of studies that prove this though...however, I'm sure there are some out there.

Edit: Just saw Dave's post

Actually I was just informed of another somewhat related study from Dalahousie University sheduled for paper release sometime in the next couple weeks that looked at the effects of working out with music. The generalities of the study showed that trainning to music increased motivation, stamina and attitude towards working out. This all lead to increased learned muscular function and biological improvement throughout the body when compared against the lesser results of those who did not work out to music. So as far as muscular development goes it can be argued that music helps with that too.

I don't know about who's "smarter"; EDM or rap producers, but I can tell you for sure that EDM listeners are MUCH more down-to-earth and more... civilized and sophisticated (?) with comparison to rap listeners...

some rap that's made out there (the lyrics) is really fucking impressive - I have to admit, even though I don't listen to that type of music... but the listeners - I think that 90% of them just enjoy the PLAIN and REPEPTITIVE beat for 5 mins.... and people say house/trance is repetitive... PFFFF... just shows how intelligent they really are (...NOT!!)

and to add to that, I'm pretty sure that the combination of so many elements in house music (especially some of the tech-electro-minimal i listen to) and how it makes the listener concentrate and 'identify' each one of the elements helps the brain be more.. organized in a way, or helps the brain sort things out better... anyways that's just what I think

normally I'd side with EDM but if you actually look at the note sequence structure of most hip hop vs edm you will find they run on the same patterns and have roughly the same number of elements. in some cases you have to focus harder on hip hop due to the added elements of the lyrics. I'm yet to come across a edm track that blows my mind with lyrical skill but I have come across many rappers that are modern day poets, obviously there are exeptions.

I think as far a brain function goes, one is not ness better than the other. If you wanted to argue influence to violence vs plur'y'ness then you may have more of a case. Also, I wouldn't use the example of any type of minimal edm as an example of the complexities of edm as a genre... generally minimal is just that, minimal. Comparing 4/4 beat minimal to off beat/break beat hip hop and claiming minimal is less repetitive is just silly.
