Isn't this the same crowd you were questioning the major EDM promoters about why don't they promote to these crowds? Well, from the way you make it sound like....they would end up hating the music at Spundae/Giant/etc.

And as much as you are there to please the crowd, it's also a time where you can educate the crowd as well. I'm not saying that means you can't play the big anthems like the crowd likes, but it does mean you can play a track here or there that you love and you think they could get into...then if the crowd does like that track, chances are someone is going to come up to you asking what it was...and whala, that person is educated. And from there he or she can tell his or her friends about the track...and whala, more people are educated. And as they attend more and more events where they are educated more bit by bit, it could get to the point of that person going, "I wonder where I can go to hear lots more of this type of stuff..."

Honestly, it's how a lot of people do get deep into EDM. But in the end, it's up to you. Playing the safe card....and no one can fault you at that if you want to insure future bookings with the promoter you played for.

And why is anyone who really loves EDM and follows the DJs they like automatically "jaded and fickle"? Too hardcore? lol As for the "cracked out" assholes...stop going to Avalon You havn't been to very many great clubs around the world aye? Yeah theres people on drugs, but thats not to say other parties dont have their share of abusers...drunks/cokeheads etc. I'm pretty sure there are still great EDM clubs around where people are friendly and care about the music.

I played to an older, loungy type crowd at Mi Piace a few weeks back, and while I did drop some more popular stuff, I played mostly good house tracks and managed to keep everyone interested and dancing without going too far off the deep end with stuff like "As The Rush Comes"

Imo, its all about context and who you're playing for. I think, given the right crowd, even if they arent 100% into house or trance, if you set them up right, and ease them into it, they will find themselves dancing. Its all about maintaining energy levels and keeping people on that ride...

/ 2 cents

Ohh aren't you clever

People at Mi Piace were dancing? you must have dropped some Armenian tunes

People in the EDM scene are too hardcore and they don't enjoy it as much because they're worring too much. At these parties the energy is amazing, people are super friendly, and they're not all cracked out. I'm not about to do a set like I do at Spundae at this event, people would leave the dancefloor in a heart beat.

My favorite crowd is still Tiesto in Tijuana and Rosarito. That crowd is awesome!

Well yah If your thrown into a pit to fight a lion, you gotta fight the lion instead of trying to teach it to not bite your head off. Theres no two ways about it. Educating a casual crowd is costly...theyre there to have fun that night and dont want to wait for the greatness of EDM to hit them and finally make sense. lol

That said...the violin player was off rhythm with what was goin on in the track, but did it work to hype the crowd? Yes. I like live instrumentation worked into EDM music. Did you get to talk to her and see what shes about?

Looked like a fun party...I rather go to a party full of nubs than a party full of jaded and fickle edm "pros". Thats why I like Vanguard rite now. Its a good mix of hardcore crowd and people who seem to be new to partyin out at a EDM club, which always brings a good vibe.

Amen. Who gives a fuck if the set has "flow" if everyone is having fun.

Mix Cd's and recordings of livesets made for public consumption is a different story and NEED flow. But yah Its hard to really qualitively analyze the flow of a liveset at a club, maybe 1 track to the next will have a noticeably good or bad flow and will piss you off or make you happy but over the whole set between havin a few drinks or a few hits from cigarette shaped pipe with a piece of God's green earth within...flow what flow? i think the point here is that the queen mary crowd doesn't give a shit about flow, but that doesn't mean you can't show them what set progression is. there are two ways to approach this kind of crowd, just play catchy beats loud and don't wreck any transitions, or put together a thoughtful, intelligent set that blows them away. 90% of them will probably be entertained no matter what you do, it's just a matter of how much effort you want to put into working the party. with a violinist like that shitting on your set, it looks like you made the right choice

She is a sweetheart! I saw her first that night @ Boulevard 3. She was also @ Gridlock'd for New Years and Avalon afterwards.
