Does every party have to be a bunch of uneducated masses of people who all just want to hear "that one song I heard a million times and know it by heart OMG" I would get bored playing to these people every night...they just want to hear the same shit over and over...
And why is anyone who really loves EDM and follows the DJs they like automatically "jaded and fickle"? Too hardcore? lol As for the "cracked out" assholes...stop going to Avalon You havn't been to very many great clubs around the world aye? Yeah theres people on drugs, but thats not to say other parties dont have their share of abusers...drunks/cokeheads etc. I'm pretty sure there are still great EDM clubs around where people are friendly and care about the music.
I played to an older, loungy type crowd at Mi Piace a few weeks back, and while I did drop some more popular stuff, I played mostly good house tracks and managed to keep everyone interested and dancing without going too far off the deep end with stuff like "As The Rush Comes"
Imo, its all about context and who you're playing for. I think, given the right crowd, even if they arent 100% into house or trance, if you set them up right, and ease them into it, they will find themselves dancing. Its all about maintaining energy levels and keeping people on that ride...

Ohh aren't you clever |
People at Mi Piace were dancing? you must have dropped some Armenian tunes

You took the words out of my mouth! Thats exactly how I feel. That's why I have more fun djing at these parties than parting at most EDM Events. People in the EDM scene are too hardcore and they don't enjoy it as much because they're worring too much. At these parties the energy is amazing, people are super friendly, and they're not all cracked out. I'm not about to do a set like I do at Spundae at this event, people would leave the dancefloor in a heart beat.
My favorite crowd is still Tiesto in Tijuana and Rosarito. That crowd is awesome! |
Well yah If your thrown into a pit to fight a lion, you gotta fight the lion instead of trying to teach it to not bite your head off. Theres no two ways about it. Educating a casual crowd is costly...theyre there to have fun that night and dont want to wait for the greatness of EDM to hit them and finally make sense. lol
That said...the violin player was off rhythm with what was goin on in the track, but did it work to hype the crowd? Yes. I like live instrumentation worked into EDM music. Did you get to talk to her and see what shes about?

Amen. Who gives a fuck if the set has "flow" if everyone is having fun. |
Mix Cd's and recordings of livesets made for public consumption is a different story and NEED flow. But yah Its hard to really qualitively analyze the flow of a liveset at a club, maybe 1 track to the next will have a noticeably good or bad flow and will piss you off or make you happy but over the whole set between havin a few drinks or a few hits from cigarette shaped pipe with a piece of God's green earth within...flow what flow?
