I have tried this before and had it backfire on me - suddenly, I made friends with the person I was trying to bump out of the picture and my view of them didn't change at all. I found myself with a really shitty person for an acquaintance and eventually had to go back to being a mean bastard again just to keep them offa me.

It's possible that my insincere gestures made them genuinely like me lol

It's also totally possible that I got double-bluffed and the person I was pretending to make-nice with saw right through my ruse and made me shoot myself in the foot.
