When I was a kid, I was spanked, and a few times was given the belt!
Coming from someone who experienced this kind of punishment, I will firmly say that I do not think it is effective.
Why?
Well, it made me *fear* my mother, which lodged a wedge between her and I. I cannot say for sure if this is true, but my mother and I don't have a wonderful relationship now, and I wonder if perhaps she didn't choose to use physical punishment, if that would be a little different?
It also made me lose respect for her. She would spank me, and I would be angry and resentful. When I got older I started to look down on her for not being able to rationally discuss the issue with me.
One time when I was 14-15, my mother slapped my leg really hard for something, I looked at her and I said with the fiercest resolve "if you EVER hit me again, I will not think twice about hitting you back". She never touched me again.
I mean, don't get me wrong... I wasn't beaten or anything. I was spanked or whatever when I did something my mom deemed as wrong. However, I don't think it EVER taught me a lesson. Instead, I would leave the experience pissed off, angry, upset, resentful, but NEVER did I consider my wrong doing and put together the fact that what I did wrong warranted my whack. Looking back, I only remember the reason of why I got the belt ONCE, and I can assure you it did NOT NOT NOT teach me a lesson. In fact, it made me realize how corrupt and evil adults are.
The ONLY time I would ever say physical punishment would be warranted is if the child used it first. For example, my kid pulls another kids hair and makes that kid cry. I would pull my kids hair and ask him how he liked it. Obviously he wouldn't, and I would then explain that if he didn't like it, then he shouldn't do it to other people either.
