Smith is the first player in NFL history to have five straight seasons with over 1,400 rushing yards. Smith and Jim Brown are the only players with seven straight 10-touchdown seasons to start their career. With 1,021 yards rushing in 2001, Smith became the first player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in 11 consecutive seasons and the first to post 11 1,000-yard rushing seasons in a career. He is also the NFL's all-time leader in rushing attempts with 4,409.

Smith currently holds the NFL record in career rushing yards with 18,355 and is the only player in NFL history to rush for over 18,000 yards, breaking the previous record held by Walter Payton, on October 27, 2002. He leads all running backs with 166 career touchdowns, and his 175 total touchdowns ranks him second only to Jerry Rice's 207 touchdowns. The sum of his rushing yards, receiving yards (3,224) and fumble return yards(-15), gave him a total of 21,564 yards from the line of scrimmage, making him one of only four players in NFL history to eclipse the 21,000-combined yards mark.

Smith also accumulated a number of NFL postseason records, including rushing touchdowns (19), consecutive games with a rushing touchdown (9) and 100-yard rushing games (7). His 1,586 yards rushing is also tops on the NFL postseason chart, and he shares the total playoff touchdown mark of 21 with Thurman Thomas. Smith is one of only five NFL players who have amassed over 10,000 career-rushing yards and 400 career receptions.

Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice are the only two non-kickers to score 1000 points in a career.

+3 big rings

with his post-season stats alone he should at the very least be on the table.

but dude, Emmitt Smith also played on some crazy dynasties where he was just a PART of the winning system. The Bears had some good defenses in the mid 80s but their offence was absolute garbage for most of Payton's career. Smith also played 36 more games than Payton. Smith was fucking great and I wish the bears had him throughout the 90s but put Walter Payton or Barry Sanders at their peaks on those Dallas dynasty teams and they would have impressed far more.

True.....Grew up watchin Payton....

But it seems almost every player, especially that generation, all believe
Jim Brown is the best footbal player ever, not just RB.

Its hard to dispute the opinions of greats

that's definitely true. Most "experts" have Brown, Payton and Sanders in their top 3. But this is like comparing Maurice Richard to Bobby Orr/Wayne Gretzky or Pele to George Best. Theres no diffinitive answer, just opinions.

but it's fun to argue!

so Emmitt Smith should not be considered because he played on a competent team?...because none of these other running backs had good offencive lines, right

his stats as a running back mean little because Troy Aikman could throw a football and Jimmy Johnson knew how to coach football?

by that logic the only running back that should ever be considered as the greatest would be Barry Sanders and maybe LT.

the fact that Emmitt has 3 rings should mean little in the consideration. i just mentioned it because i thought it was mildly noteworthy.

I voted Erick Dickerson cause he has the most retarded sounding name.

wait. wtf! how did corey dillon's name make the list? yeah yeah he did set the single game rushing record against those denver broncos, and he did practically carry jon kitna and jeff blake all those years back then, but anything else? i don't think he has deserved enough cred to earn a best running back ever notion.

Well he did carry that team & broke some records. I also used to like his style & wanted to give 15 choices.

Tony Dorsett, Earl Campbell, and Gale Sayers would all be >>> Bettis and Dillon

A real list would have those old time greats. Marcus Allen too!

Not even that, but how the F did he get a vote???

lol...

I never liked Corey Dillon, because he was always a streaky fantasy player in Cinci, until his second to last season there... he was never GREAT...

pound for pound.. honestly, without off-the-field-shit, in their prime: Ricky Williams > Corey Dillon every day of the week....
