What I have learned is the e music scene to be a bit different from regular DJs.
A regular hiphop or top40 DJ just goes and plays whatever is popular or on the radio. Or for hiphop DJ case, you play the same song for 10 years every night in the club "if you got a 10 dollar bill put your hands up..." lol. Anyways, these DJs are expendible, and the same as any other DJ, only difference some techincally better than the other, but still expendible.
In the e-music scene, at least what it is supposed to be, it is more of an artist approach. I mean you don't book Richie Hawtin at Trance Energy event right? These people are artists, not just DJs. They have a certain style, a certain sound and thats what you get. They make their own tracks on the most part as well. Granted for example, someone like Richie may play more techno oriented tracks (not hard though) at some events over minimal but still along the same lines in terms of style.
If lets say Richie Hawtin or Gabriel Ananda or whoever were booked at Trance Energy or some big trance event, would they play trance just to suit the crowd? Certainly not, becasue they are artists- and this was a mistake by the booking team, event organizers.
Likewise I am sure Circus knows what type of music should be played at their club and what kind their crowd digs. And before anything like mixing skills or whatever, I am sure they will choose the DJ who suits their bill in terms of style. After that it is track selection and technical skills I guess.
Plus, you dont get around by people saying "Wow that guy is technically awesome but uhh his tracks, music and track selection is just ok or not good- but I'll go to see him". But there are DJs, and even big ones that have made it on the opposite scenario, and will continue to do so, as long as technically they are "good enough".
