xiad you are right that racial profiling is wrong on so many levels but playing devils advocate you have to realize that muslims or people of arabic origin are currently perceived as a threat.
If another major attack was to take place from a group of other type of nationals the threat or at least the perception of what it constitutes would be shifted.
I imagine that during the 20+ years of the Ireland/Uk conflict that started after bloody sunday Irish people must have been subject to some form of profilling when entering the Uk.


There is also a major issue in the muslim community is passivity in regards to terror. I am in no way judging everyone but you have to realize that there is little to no globally visible position from the community that with one voice is stating their disaproval of attacks on the western world.

I can name only a handful of public figures who have dedicated their lives to bringing postive light to islam and it's perception to the world... all of these people are paying with their lives having to watch their backs with a constant fear of death.

If you remain silent the rest of the world will only view you as supporters of a cause affiliated with your people. Only the loudest ones get heard.


Perhaps you will feel insulted by my analysis but this is the way it is perceived by many much like the rest of the world thinks all americans are pro-Bush because there appears to be no anti-Bush movement inside the United States at least not visible to the rest of the world.

jdat, by no means are you insulting me. The fact that I am lucky enough to be of both Arab and American origin, it is quite simple for me to step back and veiw things objectivly. Yes, there is a huge void in the visibility of public officials condemning terror and aggression against the West. and yes, the governments are working by probablilty and not percentages. I myself too find myself profiling individuals of my OWN culture that chose not to keep their relgious beliefs to themselves, and publicly protraying such. For example, you just DONT wear Nikab to a US airport, just as much as you DONT wear a turban whilst trying to board a plane.

However, to me, the line is drawn somewhere in between. There are those of us who fly frequently. I make at least 3 or 4 trips in a year. I dont walk around with a turban, or even a shirt with arabic writing on it. I'm your normal average Joe who loves football, bitches, and beer. (oh, and trance music, )

There is a mosque across the street from the electronics store I work at, Fed's monitor that place like crazy because the guy that was behind the first bombing of the world trade center in 1993 was living/hiding out in that mosque. The guy was really old... but the street (which is 6 lanes wide) was shut down with unmarked cars and snipers on the roof.

First, I'm sorry that you have to go through that. I do not agree with the principle behind racial profiling, but I do see the reality of the situation.

Secondly, it's true that you only had a handful of hijackers. If that were the only circumstance behind racial profiling, I'd agree that it was in no way warranted. However, you have hundreds, thousands even, of middle eastern ethnicity that continually threaten and promise more terrorist attacks on the US. I think if there were no large, vocal "terrorist" groups in the middle east, we wouldn't have this situation.
