I think that Canon is top all across the digital product line. There are some other interesting ones like Panasonic with the Leica lens but you have to check out the software to see if it is user friendly which Canons are. =)

Thank you sooo much everyone. I appreciate your input.

I plan on going to a store this Saturday and checking out different cameras. Personally, I think I am biased towards Canon's SD series, even though I have had a Sony DSC one before.
Ben: I will definitely check out the SD800.

With regard to Canon's SD series, I like how small they are. I don't fidget very much with any of the buttons so I guess I just point and click.

Costco...I will take a look there.

Skwallie: You know who dropped it.

oh btw for the point and shoot i'm not going to jump on the canon dryhumping bandwagon. Id recommend the fuji f40 it comes out next month. as said previously.

From my semi-extensive research of the Fuji line, the F40fd is an upgrade of the F10/20 series, not the F30. It lacks many manual settings that come with the F30, but offers fd = face detection technology (so you lose most of the manual settings but get the ability to focus on 10 faces at the same time...blah!)

I went for the F30 rather than waiting for the yet-unheard-of F50, which would probably be similar to the F30 build with higher megapixels and more features. Street price for the F30 is about $259, I mailed in a $50 rebate on mine. Downside is that it only takes xD cards. The newer models (F40 and up) should take both xD and SD cards.

Oh yeah, I don't think the battery will ever run out on this camera! That's why this cam's a little thicker, but the upside is that you get approx. 580 pics per battery charge, more than enough for me on an average night.

You should check dell.com also. Right now they have the SD630 for $239.96 and the SD900 for $424.96 + free shipping.

From www.BensBargains.net *

Dell Home has the Canon Powershot SD500 7MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical Zoom for $300 - 25% code ?5M5NTR0PNKV97 [Exp 2/7, 850 uses] = $225 with free shipping

I think this coupon code works with any item over $300, so try it out if you decide to go with Dell. Dell is a Canon authorized distributor. If you buy a Canon camera from an unauthorized distributor, then you have no warranty!

* Unaffiliated with TA Ben (gehzumteufel)...I think!

Edit: Just tried the 25% code with the SD900, but it doesn't work since the camera's already 15% off. There doesn't seem to be a way to buy the camera full price and take the 25% off instead of the 15% either. The 25% off may also be specific to the SD500, but I've never seen that before.

If you want the SD900, Costco.com has it:

Canon SD900 10MP 2.5"
3x Optical 12x Total
Battery & Charger
& Bonus ATP 2GB SD Card
Movie Mode with Sound
DIGIC III Image Processor
ISO 1600
$419.99
Item # 174720
Shipping & Handling included

You could drop-kick it from the balcony at Avalon and they would very likely still give you a replacement or refund within the warranty period! Buy it with Costco Amex card and you get an extra year's warranty through the Amex warranty manager too (but it probably wouldn't cover drop-kicks!)

Are the canon SD800 and SD900 the only ones with IS?

Pardon my ignorance, but does IS mean that it helps get a clear picture even though you may be a little bit jittery?

Seriously, how many megapixels do you think I should get?

in2muzikk: Thanks for the shopping info!!

IS = Image Stabilization. the ones in the SD line that have it are the 700 and the 800. the 900 does NOT have IS.and yes its exactly what your thinking it is. it takes a lot of movement to get the camera to show the wobbly hands.

and 7MP is fine. 10 isnt really necessary unless its full frame and then your looking at either a 5d or a 1d.

also the SD800 has a wide-angle lens. this means you can fit more in the picture at the same zoom as other cameras.

Best price on the SD800 through Dell over the last few months was $288-319. It's currently not on sale, but keep checking back as Dell periodically runs specials such as 15% off all peripherals (includes cameras), etc. You could also search www.bensbargains.net for SD800 and see what comes up. Unfortunately, Costco.com doesn't sell this model, although it's possible that a store might still have it. Good luck!
