In addition to Hai Lee's response, on the "Lunar New Year's Eve Day", it's actually quite a mind-spur, but fun. Supposedly, we are to sweep, and mop our floors to "wipe, and clean" away whatever bad, unwanted spirits left in our house. (There's more to do this, which leads to Lunar New Year's Day) Whenever the cleaning is done, on the eve eve day or eve day itself, the family comes together for a big, happy, and joyous meal as one. Lots of food, soup, rice.. you get the jist. The whole nine yards of the table itself is filled with food. [I don't know if I can attest to the cook a whole lot of food, and eat leftovers for 3 days, my family hasn't done such thing, or I just don't remember because I was always out clubbing the past years, LOLLLL)
On Lunar New Year Day, as you all know, Red Envelopes are exchanged. Bear in mind, only married people give out red envelopes. Single and ready to mingle individuals don't give out money. With regards to the lion dances, and firecrackers, those are done to once again, "scare, and rid away the old, unwanted spirits of the past year". So all the lion dance groups go around Chinatown, blessing stores, temples et cetera to wish them a prosperous new year.
The whole festival itself lasts for about what.. 15 days, if someone can confirm? Here's some more information about an upcoming Lunar New Year related festival/event, come watch us/our crew perform!
