even though all teams will have the same tires, it stills plays as a large part of their race strategy because they will be forced to run all the compounds (I cant remember how many) of their tires in 1 race. so not all cars will be rnning the same compound at the same time. this is a new regulation to encourage more strategic racing.

What? So a team will have to run ALL their tyre compounds on 1 track? That's retarded - different tracks require different compounds.. why would anyone run a hard compound on a track that's better suited for a soft compound tyre...

Arrggghhh FIA, you're eventually going to make me stop watching F1 if you implement any more of these nonsensical regulations. Who thinks up these things?!?!

Ah...no. Knowing what underwear a basketball player wears, is like knowing what underwear a F1 driver wears.

Honestly, as somebody who has watched for years, I would love to be able to know what compound the teams are on, myself. I find that a lot of the time the ITV guys are just too slow in calling some of the action on the track, and I believe I am smart enough to make my own conclusions.

This rule is good, and I am glad they didn't just paint the side walls a different colour. The reasoning was correct, as it would have been too expensive. Each team's spies will easily be able to figure out which teams are running which compounds, so in terms of giving away secrets, I really don't think it applies here.

In terms of running each different compound in the race weekend, I do not think they will have to do it during the race. They will most certainly have to test each compound during the weekend, which will help them determine which is the best for their driver/car/track combination.

The FIA has to make the sport more accessible to the viewer, because it has been heading in the opposite direction for a long time. F1 is very secretive, and I agree that in certain aspects it must be so. The fact that a fan cannot easily go racing on their spare time, like playing a game of hockey, means they have to be more involved in the 'show'. The FIA must also be worried with the recent success of the A1 series, which makes their teams much more accessible to the fan. TV ratings determine F1's finances and chances of success, why not introduce measures to try and entice fans to watch? F1 got boring for a while, they have to do something to 'save' the sport.

As has become customary in Formula One, a new season would not be a new season without a few rule changes to contend with.

Fortunately, the powers-that-be within the sport finally discovered a winning qualifying format last year, and this remains the same for 2007.

But there are a few other alterations, so let's brings you up to speed.

* The most important change in the regulations for 2007 is that all teams will be supplied by one tyre manufacturer - Bridgestone.

The Japanese company will supply two specifications of its Potenza tyre at each grand prix, and each driver will have 14 sets at his disposal (seven per specification).

A driver may use a maximum of four sets on the first practice day and the remaining 10 on the Saturday and Sunday.

In dry conditions, both specifications must be used during the race.

In the wet, a driver has a total of seven sets of tyres available - four wet-weather and three extreme-weather.

* The two Friday practice sessions - one in the morning and one in the afternoon - have been extended from 60 minutes to 90.

The teams can send out a maximum of two cars for each session, and they must be driven by either the two race drivers or by a nominated test driver.

The identity of the drivers must be announced by 4pm the previous day.

* The engines must again cover two race weekends, although this only applies to the Saturday and Sunday.

The Friday is no longer subject to this regulation, which means engines may be changed ahead of Saturday practice.

* There is also a new safety car rule, specifically that as soon as the safety car moves on to the track, the pit lane is closed.

It is only opened again once all the cars have lined up behind the safety car.

In addition, lapped drivers then have to overtake any drivers ahead of them who are on the lead lap. They also overtake the safety car, drive an additional lap and rejoin the field at the back.

The safety car stays out until at least this process is completed.

So you do have to use both compounds in the race. I have no idea what the FIA is trying to achieve by making that mandatory.

i think it's a desperate way to create more opportunity for mistakes in the race.

im guessing you're speaking of 2005, which was two years ago when they had engine failures more frequently, in 2006 mclaren dumped the mercedes-ilmor engine, for a 100% mercedes engine...mind you those ilmor engines are the same ones that made mika champion, and kimi 2nd place in 2003...

the mercedes engine proved way more reliable...2 engine failures in 19 races over the whole team...

kimi's failure in monaco was a heat shield fire...de la rosa had a fuel pump problem, and i believe it was montoya who had an electrical problem, those things have nothing to do with engine reliability...furthermore, the MP4-22 was in development prior to the MP4-21, they had tons of time to debug the 2007 car of any potential reliability issues they would uncover during the 2006 season, with 2 engine failures over 3 drivers, i'll say there's not much room for improvement, and that kimi needs to stop drinking...even michael schumacher's ferarri had an engine failure in 2006, 1 failure, over two drivers, over 19 races, to go around shouting mclaren is blowing engines left and right and that in 2006 they had a reliability issue is an overstatement.

Then, I blew out the candle.
