Some guy with two real parrots on his bag. Not tethered or anything- totally loose. Perfectly well behaved- just the odd squawk and what I think was a bit of them saying hello.
Woman opposite him asked what was in the bag he was holding that kept moving about....so he opened it to show her. It was a python! (no pics of that!) Crazy.
Got off at Jay street with them perched on top of his bag:

Blue one on the top had to duck to avoid hitting the door frame.

Dood that guy is EVERYWHERE!! I saw him in the village while I was waiting for Mere for happy hour. Then I saw him in Times Square when I went to Virgin for a dvd. Then I saw him AGAIN because my friends from boston came down and we were sight seeing. This was ll in the last 2 weeks. When I was waiting for mere, he was carrying the snake and shoving the head in peoples faces. thats just wrong. If he did that I woulda peed or punched him, which ever bodily reaction came first.

i've been riding the subway since '86 (day/night, all over the city) so i could literally fill tomes with stories...

from the non-violent/non-disgusting story heap:

-- there used to be a dope rapping conductor on the E train. he'd update his simplistic rhymes frequently and had everyone laughing, even during rush hour. "you are now aboard the jamaica-bound E; richmond hill is the place to be; uh uh"

--- when i was in h.s. riding the 4 train in the bx, kids would either break into (or simply enter, if unlocked) empty conductors' booths and proceed to rap or shout out their friends and schools over the intercom. this happened way too frequently - one time there was a severe delay as kids stole the conductor's keys and ran off the train.

--- sometimes you'd catch snippets of convos between the conductor and motorman over the intercom and the results were often amusing/disturbing:
"so whats going on - is he dead, is he passed out? can you check it out?"
-"no, i dont want to touch him"
"fine, we'll call ems when we get to the yards - we're almost there anyway"

-middle of the night, uptown-bound a-train (there were maybe a half-dozen of us in the car looking around at each other like wtf was that about?!)

--- there's the blind violin player on the N/R lines in brooklyn/manhattan. i used to think he was dope when he first started performing, but then i got kind of sick of him as he played the same shit every day. apparently others felt the same and he began to receive boos and critiques of his performances (and eventually switched lines).

--- weird eco-dude who used to ride the R and F in lower manhattan and wore one suit made out of cans and another out of grass. grass suit was hot.

--- people who used to collect the "jose y marisol" anti-aids cartoon series. as soon as those shits went up, people would be taking them down without fail. the only ad i ever took from the subway was for captain morgan rum with this dude that looked like flex the comedian doing these ridiculous dance poses. shit used to crack me up. [now ads are covered up, in a move designed to make the subway an even more anodyne environment -- the graffiti-proof trains were the beginning of the end ...]

Back in the day, when I was about 11, my father dropped me off at my cousins place on bay parkway in brooklyn. I slept over his place to chill it was cool because he was supposed to take me on the subway back to my parents place in queens for a bbq. This was around July 4th so before we get on the train, my cousin takes me to this bodega by the train station and in the back he knocked on the door and the door opened to a guy selling fireworks. I guess my cousin told my dad he can get them for me so my dad dropped me off so I can help my cousin carry them on the train. LOL

So we got on the train and i was carrying this paper brown bag with rockets sticking out of them all the way from brooklyn. My cousin had 3 paper bags double bagged with the outside in plastic.

the story isn't really going anywhere crazy like something happened with the fireworks, just that as young as I was, unknowingly, just carrying a shopping bag of fireworks on the train from brooklyn to queens to me now is pretty crazy lol. There are just somethings you see when you are young that will forever tarnish who you are and be rooted deeply in memory...this was one of them!

I remember playing with the tip of the rocket as it was sticking out the bag and i pulled off the plastic pointy cap and my cousin was like don't do that they might go off LOL
