i've been riding the subway since '86 (day/night, all over the city) so i could literally fill tomes with stories...
from the non-violent/non-disgusting story heap:
-- there used to be a dope rapping conductor on the E train. he'd update his simplistic rhymes frequently and had everyone laughing, even during rush hour. "you are now aboard the jamaica-bound E; richmond hill is the place to be; uh uh"
--- when i was in h.s. riding the 4 train in the bx, kids would either break into (or simply enter, if unlocked) empty conductors' booths and proceed to rap or shout out their friends and schools over the intercom. this happened way too frequently - one time there was a severe delay as kids stole the conductor's keys and ran off the train.
--- sometimes you'd catch snippets of convos between the conductor and motorman over the intercom and the results were often amusing/disturbing:
"so whats going on - is he dead, is he passed out? can you check it out?"
-"no, i dont want to touch him"
"fine, we'll call ems when we get to the yards - we're almost there anyway"
-middle of the night, uptown-bound a-train (there were maybe a half-dozen of us in the car looking around at each other like wtf was that about?!)
--- there's the blind violin player on the N/R lines in brooklyn/manhattan. i used to think he was dope when he first started performing, but then i got kind of sick of him as he played the same shit every day. apparently others felt the same and he began to receive boos and critiques of his performances (and eventually switched lines).
--- weird eco-dude who used to ride the R and F in lower manhattan and wore one suit made out of cans and another out of grass. grass suit was hot.
--- people who used to collect the "jose y marisol" anti-aids cartoon series. as soon as those shits went up, people would be taking them down without fail. the only ad i ever took from the subway was for captain morgan rum with this dude that looked like flex the comedian doing these ridiculous dance poses. shit used to crack me up. [now ads are covered up, in a move designed to make the subway an even more anodyne environment -- the graffiti-proof trains were the beginning of the end ...]
