Remember that the employers will probably spend 20 seconds max looking at your resume.

Start of with 2-3 lines detailing what you job you are seeking and what how your strengths will help you flourish in the job you seek by linking them to the job requirements. Im wokring as a Business Analyst so il use a sample BA resume in the example

Example (for entry level): Seeking a position as an entry level IT Business Analyst to apply my strong analytical and communication skills to satisfy customer requirements by designing, developing and implementing innovative business solutions.

If youve been working for a while then just talk about yourself

Example: An IT business analyst with over x years experience with knowledge of blah blah blah having worked in blah blah blah industries

Then comes the work experience. As people have said before in this thread, highlight the key words in your resume that relate to the job you are applying for. If you have accomplished something that generated some profit and are aware of the numbers, that is probably the most important thing to highlight. Nothing makes employers stand up and take notice like numbers do. Cover letters help since they detail you personality and strengths and show why you want to work for the company.

Once you get the interview, the most important thing to remember is to act equal to the person interviewing you. It helps to show them some attitude and make them think you couldnt care less if you got the job or not but that means act confident not lazy. Do a lot of research on the recent activities of the companies and ask them questions on it. A lot of the times the questions you ask can make or break your getting the job.

The hardest part about making a resume is to get started on it. Once you get the first few lines , everything starts falling into place. Just be very careful about having a consistent format and watchout for typos.

All the best.

lol. I can sense the experience you have had with this the last 7 months....

Make my resume for me naa...

I wouldn't recommend that.

Depends on job sector... cover letters are used to "screen in" for my area for instance. Resumes are secondary (I've been in stituations where my resume wasn't even read). Also depends on if you're "cold calling" for a job or applying for a specific position... regardless I'd like to have a strong cover letter. But I'm not an expert and just saying don't neglect the cover letter.

I agree w/ the master resume too and refining it according to the position... that's what I do.

+1

Would you hire someone who was only interested in the job because of the paycheque? Me neither.

You don't just want a position when you interview, you want THAT position. You are the best candidate for that job and that is evidenced not only through your resume, but you interest and enthusiasm.

I would rather have one guy who loved his job working for me than 10 guys who couldn't care less.

yea i guess i didnt word that correctly

The fact that you are there already shows that you are interested in the position but sometimes we can end up acting like not getting it is the end of the world for us and it shows in the body language during the interview so i guess what i meant was confidence is the key.

I read somewhere that employers usually know in 27 seconds if they are going to hire you or not so the first impression you make is very important.

I didnt mean that your attitude in the interview room should mirror your attitude once you get the job. Ofcourse you want the job and will do it to the best of your abilities once you get it but make the employees feel that you are confident and competent enough to get a similar position anywhere else.

Have a solid resume (standard stuff, looks good, professional). This doesn't have to be tailored.

Have a cover letter that is tailored to a job. If you are applying to be a car salesman, highlight how you relate to the job, what you have done in the past that relates to the job, and, most importantly, highlight how YOU can make ME money. As an employer, I don't give a flying hoot for anything else but YOU making ME $$$ (so to say).

Whenever you can (which is to say whenever you have a contact at the company that you talked to), drop off a thank-you-for-your-consideration letter. In person. Dressed up. Be polite.

Works like a charm...
