my brother had that a few years ago. hes asthmatic but didnt want to let his teacher down. they were doing the beep test and he collapsed and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance.. 2 cop cars, a fire truck, and an ambulance came to his rescue... at this time, me and my mom were eating brunch and rushed to the school

there are plenty of fun, exciting way to get kids involved in physical activity. running up and down stairs is not one of them.
Whether the physical activities have to be fun or exciting is irrelevant.
The point is to get quality exercise.
I remember doing shuttle runs during elementary school and I didn't think it was fun at all, but was more for physical activity.

That's just stupid on the teacher's part, if he/she knew about asthmatic condition of your bro and make him take part in activities that forces him to exert himself more than he should.

I imagined a fat kid hating the excercise so much he stopped and decided to bash his head into the ground to get out of doing the work out.
why the fuck would you even post that??

That's truly sad! RIP. My thoughts go out to the family of this little one.
I don't understand such harsh* exercise for an 8 year old to do in gym class. If it was those 2 step stair cases then ya I understand but a full sized school stair case, c'mon now.
*for an 8 yearold
I gotta agree Theresa, coming from someone who is usually really sympathetic to even think that. He could have been a scronny little kid, but the stairs was just to much for him.

Uh... it exercises your whole cardiovascular system, as well as builds strength in your legs. What more do you want from a quality exercise?
Related question: do you not consider running, or let's say track-and-field to be quality exercises also?
Stairs didn't kill this kid, and neither did gym class. Physical exercise did. He could have as easily died playing tag that afternoon with his friends.

A healthy eight-year old should be able to run up and down stairs. Obviously this child was not a healthy eight-year old. It's sad, but this most likely would have happened playing hockey/soccer/climbing/running, if it didn't happen when it did.

Uh.....there are other exercises that engage your whole cardiovascular system and do not require 20 + students to be in a stairwell....
gym class is held in a gymnasium last time i checked.
kids are accident prone......falls, scuffed knees. kids are always gunna get hurt. making kids run within a building is hardly safe.
ps. i know that exercise may be at fault. but im saying students shouldnt be made to forced up and down stairs is all.

If you're worried about the students being cooped up in a stairwell, keep in mind that not all stairwells are small enclosed spaces like in apartment buildings. At some schools the stairwells can fit say 10 full size people across.

it's not about the size of the stairwell or how many people it fits but rather how unsafe it is to have kids running up and down stairs.
