Bring back the LIVE sets!

word. internet radio and shoutcasts have oversaturated the playing field with (unimaginative) uniformity -- even as they've achieved the admirable goal of democratizing the scene.

back in the day, available sets were generally limited to broadcasts of live gigs which, in the absence of a wide range of choices, everyone listened to (hence why there weren't requests for links in every thread).

radio shows can be a positive force if done properly. pvd, for example, allows enough of his live gigs to be released to satisfy his global fanbase, while using radio fritz to be more experimental. digweed on kiss was sort of similar. balance is important (but if pressed for one or the other, i'd take a live gig recording over a studio set every time).

But you are basically saying something that fits to everything, even in radio shows (as with trance artists and so on) there are the are exception that are worth to be followed, important is to be selective.

The "hit parade" variety of DJ could be replaced by robots soon enough if not for the fact that people seem to need an actual human being to idolize and put in place of the music.

amen to that!

Being a DJ isn't just about making people dance at a club. I say this often, and being someone who is not much of a clubber, have been to a few but it's not my thing anymore. I feel, however, that DJing is ultimately about playing music. It doesn't matter what they play, as long as they are playing it. I can see the point about not playing tracks that are more meant to be club tracks, those that are less listenable (more percussive, techy, fast stuff) but a DJ isn't just a guy who plays records to make people dance. It's about the music, and if you like the music, that is the most important, not where they play it, how they play it or who plays it. Listening to a radio show, is no different than a mixed CD, and if it can emulate the quality of a mixed CD, that's great. If it really wants to emulate a club, then a live set would be even better in that respect.

Yes, there's a shitload of radio shows of piss poor quality. However, a radio show does not HAVE to suffer from being aired weekly. I tend to enjoy Digweed's show week after week. Granted, not all the tunes he spins are directly appealing to me, and there are weeks where nothing *really* grabs me, but it's still well worthy of a listen week after week.

i agree with most what's said on this thread. i too would like to see the end of all these crap shows. i would love to hear more good live sets. but i do agree with Spirit5 though, not every dj set is made to be danced to and that's just fine too.
anyway my point is that there should be more quality and less quantity (as with everything in life, but it will never happen though).

Actually its people like you that immortalize DJs, thinking that anyone that wants to be a succesful DJ has to devote 100% of their time finding music, well to be honest, seeing as how most DJs start off young, like myself, and MANY others, we are poor ass college students with 1 credit card and a tight limit on it at that.

To be honest, I could spend 4-5 hours per day looking for tunes, and I'm sure I'd find plenty of bad ass ones but that also will inevitably turn you into an all purpose DJ without a distinct style of his own, and those kinds of DJs (Tenaglia and others aside, I know there are some) aren't taking the easy route in marketing themselves because for the n00bsters that dont know ALL that much about the music will often associate DJs with a certain style even if it isnt EXACTLY right.

"Hey man lets go see DJ Fuck you"

"Ya I heard he plays Gabber"

"Sweet, I love Gabber"

*chest pump* FOOTBALL RULES!

Ahem, anyways

I think that the job of the DJ is to work the crowd, to know the crowd, and to read the crowd. If you're up there playing tunes nobody's heard you may be well recieved at a more DEDICATED edm venue, however, if you're at a bar/regular hours nightclub/strip club/wedding/House party/Loft Party etc etc... You probably shouldnt be playing minimal gabber speedcore with a touch of drum & bass.

I always remind myself when im hunting for tunes that "YES THIS TUNE KICKS ASS" but "Very few other people will think so, better keep it safe for the RIGHT moment to bust it out".

Crap on those top40 whore DJs that play SAY HELLO 5 times in their set ALL YOU WANT, I crap on them also, but these guys are good DJs in the sense that they understand the venue they're playing at, and who they are playing to.

All us crazy TAs always forget what a DJ was 20-30 years ago, and what 90% of DJs today still are, mediums, human playlists there to make sure EVERYONE is enjoying themselves and not just the musical snobs like us.

If you have a look around you´ll find enough Radioshows with some livesets aswell

It´s just a point of view.

Not only that there are enough DJ´s not playing the same stuff like others do, no they take the risk to be unique

I know some of them and I have enough diversity if I look around the web or if i go on events
Livesets are great indeed and it had to be with the sound of the crowd, but mostly its cut out..........

and you need some permission for
