No, not really. In truth, this was what DJs did and were supposed to do--play good and interesting music and not worry about styles or genres. I concur, Oakenfold's goa mix is fascinating, and probably the best mix he's ever done--it harkens back to the time when he once did balls-out things like turn out all the lights in his Heaven nightclub and play Tsaikovsky's 1812 Overture in its entirety (its 15 minutes long). Oakenfold has always had a penchance for the theatrics.
The showmanship for the theatrics outshone the actual theatrics themselves about halfway through the decade however, such that by the time Tranceport rolled around, his mixes were no longer brimming with innovative qualities and his image had ballooned out of control. By 1998, he had morphed into some doofus on stage with his headphones pulled over his eyes playing maladroit trance.
His last semi-interesting mix was his Global Underground in New York. But even at that point you can tell he didn't care anymore. After that he was no more than a trancecracker DJ. Not coincidentally, that was about the point that most of you decided you liked trance music. |
QFT.
The Goa Mix is good, but not groundbreaking. DJ's do this all the time, even myself (if you can even call me a DJ, mixing is just a hobby for me). Maybe you're just used to the usual trance-bash, but my reality is playing 5 or more genres in the same set. Jungle, acid, dubstep, grime, industrial, electro, detroit tech, you name it.

It may not be ground breaking, but not many people can play 5 different genres in a set and make is sound the least bit coherent.
If you can do so, I think some of us would be very interested in hearing a set

The mark of a good DJ.
If you only play one style of music in your set, you aren't doing a very good job of DJing.

Before the standard was lowered to the status of wedding and mobile DJ level of competence, this is essentially what every rave and club DJ did, and before the onset of digital decks, mind you.
A DJ limiting themselves to one genre of music is like a fat person limiting themselves to one type of food. When there's so much great stuff out there, why ignore 99% of it when it's your job not to?

Big bump lol.
I think the only way to find this mix is to either torrent/p2p or ebay the 2cd one.
I think lots of dj's around that time did stuff like Oakie did. Check out Kid Paul & Paul van Dyk's Clubnight from 1993 (if you can find it).
