If you look at the 3D, you'll see it has two midi controller portions.

Basically the 1D is a MIDI controller only.

The 2D has the same control, but also has the midi clock and nudge feature, as well as a 4 stereo channel soundcard.

Their intention is you buy both and stick on on either side of your mixer.

lol, i never really auctually sat down and thought about some of this, i guess i was a bit wowed by thier proposals, i always thought it would be way to complex to control all of these different things at once. they claim so much but really its fairly limited. i was looking at these types of mixers that integrate midi but now i think im just gonna go for a 4-6 channel mixer with fx send/return and have my laptop, synth and midi controllers goin. when you auctually watch some of these live remixers, you dont see them doin fuck all with there mixers besides mixing, they're usin their controllers for everything.

Well doesn't the DJM800 have it's own midi clock and sound card, so a 1D should be enough as it's slaved to that? I think....

The 800 doesn't have a soundcard built-in.

The new Ecler will, as will the Korg Zero 4/8.

Clearly you can get a different soundcard as well. I just kind of like the all-in-one aspect of the 2D.

And there are cheaper MIDI controllers out there as well, they just aren't built as nicely.

whats the advantage to having the soundcard?
I am intregued by the idea of combining ableton with cdj's but i don't know ableton too well
Would i be able to do this with a 1D? If I got a 2d would it be a lot easier?

Well if you want to use ableton with an existing mixer, you'll need at least 2 stereo outputs from your PC into the mixer (one for playing, one for cueing)... and ideally more... so if you don't already have a multi-channel soundcard, this might be a good solution.

The 2D also has the BPM clock and nudge feature, which is SUPPOSED to help you sync ableton up to traditional decks. I've heard mixed results about the feature on the 3D however.

how difficult would it be to synch ableton up to cds on a djm 800 using a 1d?
From what i understand This would also mean i would need a soundcard with 2 outputs?

Yeah you would need an external soundcard. Buying the 1D would be no different than getting something like an Evolution UC33e or Trigger Finger, just higher quality.

technically you don't really need an interface with 4 channels (dual outputs) as you can get away without cueing in ableton. Personally i have a pair of CDJ200's a pair of CDJ800mk2's AND ableton all hooked up to my djm800. my m-audio audiophile USB technically only has 1 stereo line output (1/4" and 1/8") but i'm making use of the digital out as well to cue.
