That was a common practice in Christian countries until not long ago, actually. You'd leave the child at some kind of locker, ring a bell (or spin the locker's mechanism), and nuns would take care of the child. ... sure, not getting pregnant would be the perfect solution, but at least in this case you're still giving the child a chance of a better life, instead of killing it as if there were no other way.

my turn to bust on RJT for posting old news... They had that in Japan for some time now.. Also in Germany. Pretty recently the idea started picking up even more support in germany, as the authorities are discovering more infant murders/abandonment resulting in death, bla bla bla.


But idea is not new. Originated back in 1700 and even had Papal support - hence the concept of leaving the basket with unwanted baby by the church doors.

Actually Victor Hugo describes the basket thingy in his book "Notre Dame de Paris" in which are described the happenings of 1482. Quasimodo was left in one of those baskets as a child.
