download a trial version of professional recovery software. See if that can see the data. Ive had OS that wouldnt see a crashed drive and this program would. I got back like 30 gigs of music.

If you havent changed anything and it crapped out on you, its a crapped out drive and OS pointer info prolly got corrupted so you need something that doesnt rely on that to see files :Professional data recovery tools:

SMART, BIOS, all that crap is for healthy drives that have never been recognized.

I think your drive shat out.

and mac drives have the same issue. HDs are HDs.

Question: is it possible for the data to be recovered if the Serial ATA cable were, let's say, moved accidently by a bump? I'm not sure what data recovery program to use...this one I tried didn't even recognize the drive. The Western Digital program, on the other hand, DOES recognize it but if I run that program it will make the drive usable, but it will WIPE OUT everything I have on there!

There has to be some way...

friends? neighbors? dorm neighbors?

you can 2 fresh 160gb HDs + an enclosure w/ USB cable to do the transfer yourself for the price of Best Buy backing your data to disk

da...try this. get a windows 98 cd and boot from it but just go to the command prompt. then type in fdisk /mbr...this will NOT fuck up the hd. its a previously undocumented command (although sometime recently it has become documented by microsoft) but is very well documented elsewhere.

im talking about stuff like this:

http://www.bitmart.net/

not factory recovery tools. Data recovery, not hard disk recovery.

and just make sure all the plugs are in firmly on both sides. Wiggling the data cord is like unplugging the cable to your tv, doesnt do anything.

this is why its best to back up before you have a problem. the moment you heard clicking you should have tried to get the data off the drive. if you can't access the drive then you can send it into a place that recovers data. be fore warned it will probably cost $300+. this type of work is very very expensive. sorry bro hard drive failure sucks. that reminds me i need to do my monthly backup.

I have a 98 CD, in fact. I'm not sure how to go about this though.

I'm not sure how to go about this one either. I think it's because I'm too stressed out.

How about this for a kicker? I tried to install windows 98 on my dead laptop, and it took it, then went to XP Pro and it took that as well and is working again.

As for this hard drive, I'll try again tomorrow night. Thank you all for your help and suggestions....

To be continued.
