This is something I think is VERY important when you're a new DJ. You have to find people who think like you do at least a little bit, or else theres no point. Finding and working with the right people goes a LONG way...I've seen bad relationships hurt people alot, so you have to go out of your way to find people you can trust if you want to have fun playing out.

All too often I think people feel like they have to give every asshole in the scene a verbal rimjob - this isn't the case.

This phoney bologne nonsense has got to stop somewhere - it isn't the nature of the business that you HAVE to work for assholes.

Everyone in LA thinks they have to kiss ass and play shit gigs and get treated like shit before they "make it" and can hire a manager etc etc...

Thats just not true. If people stopped giving these assholes business they'd realise that it doesnt get them anywhere. And surprise! There are alot of cool people and great individuals who will work with you to throw great parties! You just gotta find them

the upper midwest is a great place to get your feet wet and learn from some very good DJ's, but shit like this goes on all too often in smaller clubs/bars. I damn near ran myself ragged trying to get my foot in the door up there in Madison, chatting up folks, playing for $20 (or less if not for free), getting dicked around frequently by people like who you're dealing with ("it all sounds the same? fuck off you asshat!"). It drove me to leave the state and quit DJ'ing (or that was the plan to quit anyway, seeing my sig indicates that plan didn't quite pan out )

if you're bringing all that shit out, you need to get a MINIMUM of $100 just for "gear rental" if he doesn't have the gear and/or sound. if he's not willing to do that plus (at a minimum) give ya free drinks, tell him to do something anatomically impossible to himself.
