I've always been under the impression that Epic was more an opinion rather than a sub genre, and it seems everything is labeled melodic if it isn't the Swedish House Mafia and has one more sound other than a bassline.

For you maybe, but not for me, i find melodic, progressive, goa, psy trance uplifting.. what gives certain type of tunes the right to use the term uplifting ?

Here is a link to a couple of CD`s from some time ago, that uses the uplifting tag.

http://www.discogs.com/release/108166

http://www.discogs.com/release/56613

http://www.discogs.com/release/54755

Has uplifting changed from being progressive, goa and psy trance.. to become the fluffy trance sound of today ?

Seems like uplifting has become more of a term of generic trance, as opposed to the opposite which these compilations indicate.

I only use uplifting to describe the track. The main sub-genres are progressive, epic, tech, psy and hard trance...all can be uplifting. Some people (like on Ishkur's guide) put uplifting as a seperate sub-genre from epic, and put in a lot of the euro-dance/pop stuff like Ian van Dahl, Lasgo, DJ Sammy etc, but I don't consider them "uplifting epic trance", it's just euro-dance music that is often uplifting in nature. Uplifting trance is just trance music that is melodic and light sounding, it's not brooding dark stuff. Something can be epic without being uplifting and vice versa. Kamil Polner and Jonas Steur are good examples of "uplifting epic trance" music.

Examples of uplifting epic trance:

Kamil Polner - Soul Cure

First State - First State

I agree about "Hope", it's my favorite uplifting epic trance tune and probably one of the best in a while. "Soul Cure" was okay but I just used it as a good example of "uplifting epic trance".

I insist on calling it "melodic trance". A melodic trance tune must not necessarily be perceieved as epic, just like it doesn't have to be perceived as uplifting.

And Ishkur's guide is a fantastic joke.

Thats the problem, those boring generic trance pieces like that gets the uplifting stamps, while more original melodic pieces of trance doesnt get called uplifting.

Here are my samples of what I think is uplifting trance:

Astral Projection - Electric Blue

Signum - Second Wave

Body Shock - Full Moon

Matanka - Lost In A Dream (Push Remix)

Push vs Globe - Tranceformation

I am just sick and tired of people generalising certain type of tunes as uplifting, while uplifting itself is different from person too person.. those tracks i mentioned arent uplifting ? to me this is uplifting trance.. these kinds of tracks gives me goosebumps all over.. and almost lifts me to another dimension at times.

Uplifting trance as we know it today, is only for those who LIKE that kinds of tracks, and not a way of generalising those certain tracks.

People who are looking for uplifting trance these days, are simply looking for melodic easy to like, ASOT.. generic trance by numbers kind of music.

Uplifting trance has become its own genre.. overused ideas, standard melodic progressions, arrangement, unoriginality.. now THATS uplifting trance as we know it.. and its a shame
