and even stranger, i like the edited theatrical release over the director's cut b/c harrison ford's voiceover is not that horrendous, and the ending with Roy's questioning of life is emotionally touching.

and vangelis' score? awesome...

the film isn't based on the book, its inspired by it, so yes it doesn't feel the same at all.

If you never read these two, you should before reading anything else:

1984
Brave New World

as a quick bonus
Fahreneit 451

And non science fiction: American Psycho, fuck yeah!!!

Thats sometimes a tough read, with his ranting about what brands are in his medicine cabinet.....and does he ever get fucked up by the end of the book. Legitimate insanity.

I think its just a sadistic look at vanity and the pursuit of happiness via the aquisition of wealth.

One book I recommended above ALL OTHERS in sci-fi:

BATTLEFIELD EARTH

Fucking read it. By L. Ron Hubbard. One of the greatest novels I've ever read in my life, and I dont even usually read science-fiction (I stick to fantasy and michael crichton/grisham/lescroat-ish type fiction)

Please, please, PLEASE, Do not let the movie fucking sway your thoughts on the book, nor let its ABSOLUTE SHITINESS discourage you from wanting to even pick up or consider reading teh book.

The movie blew massive chunks, the book was phenomenal beyond words, IMO. So fascinating. Where you think it should end, it doesnt. Turns out ur only half-way through! Fantastic!

NO.

He follows/created that religion. This matter/fact has nothing to do w/ this novel of science fiction he wrote.

He, a scientologist, is merely the author. C'est tout.

I hope the association of scientology to Hubbard's name doest cause ppl to NOT read the novel either.

(eg. I'm an atheist. Doesnt mean my stories will revolve around atheism.)

AH i see. Oh weather it was about scientology or not, wouldnt cause me not to read it. Even though I disagree or not believe in alot of things, i still like to learn/know about them.

no. you're definitely wrong.

the film is definitely based on the book. ridley scott took alot from the book. he fleshed out some relationships (deckard and the girl, made deckard single), developled the replicant's characters more (eg. roy), cut out alot of technical stuff (deckard shopping for electronic sheep), and gave the film his view of how he interpreted the book.

i'd say about 70% of the book is in the movie (eg. the initial interview between deckard and rachel is copied verbatim from the book)
