Chinatown folks are going to be mad

exactly.

For the Film Festival every year, people line up down the street before virtually EVERY big film. Will the Film Fest be charged rent?

how about boxing day on Yonge st. where all the big stores make people line up?

movie theatres...concert venues...there are quite a few examples.

so this is yet another ridiculous suggestion by a fuktard politician who simply doesn't like clubs.

I hope people write this jackass a letter and tell him to STFU.

Are you kidding me people, making the clubs pay a sidewalk fee is completely ridiculous and it I agree with the clubowners saying that its the government trying to get their hands into their pockets. To all of those who think that a rental fee would solve the big line-ups, you are delusional, creating a lineup is a business strategy to make your club look better, and if they clubs start renting the sidewalks they will just have to make their money using other means, say higher drink prices or entrance charges. Other than the esthetical resons for line ups there are other reasons, such as building up anticipation, especially in the winter time, after waiting half an hour in the cold and finally getting in, you wont be as inclined to leave the club to go somewhere else. Sounds bad...Look at the big picture people, this is how clubs stay in business, and if a club is in business it is available for you to go to. Ask yourself this, if you are in the middle of the entertainment district deciding on a club, would you go to the one that has nobody outside, or the one that has a line up of sexy chicks. I know it sucks and i know its capitalist, but that is the way it is, the bottom line is that if the club has a new fee, it will reflect in the prices that you pay. Its a necessary evil.

Sidewalk rental fee? LOL.

What about a club that is open on a Tuesday and is not busy? Should they be charged a rental fee?

Just keep the model the same. Just increase the fine for any club crowding the sidewalk. Why should less successful clubs be penalized for the success of others?

This is a great insight into liberal politics. Several people in this thread love the idea, and for what reason? Mainly to get back at people who have pissed them off in the past. Along with a groundless prediction that it will somehow shorten the lines and make their lives more convenient.

But I will concede that it's only fair that clubs should pay when every other business has to pay. I personally think that no business should have to pay, but clubs shouldn't be exempt if other businesses do.

The question is, who is going to determine whether a club is doing this "intentionally", and how? What if it's just really busy - is it fair to say they should have to pay for people to be out on the street when the only reason they're out on the street is because there's yet another regulation forcing the club to ID and frisk everybody who walks in?
