M.I.K.E.

Ugh I hate it when people make uninformed comments... MIKE's been playing techy/housey tunes for many many years, long before it became trendy. He's one of the only big producer/djs with real integrity, its too bad people dont realize that. |
Exactly. M.I.K.E.'s always had a techno/electro influence in his sound. He owns and runs an underground techno label called Scanner Digital - which has put out nothing but a slew of quality recordings since it's resurrection in November '06. It's funny how people are now taking notice when he has been doing this for years - before any of us hopped on the techno bandwagon. I've been trying to push M.I.K.E.'s sound and eclecticism on here for years - but most people just don't pay attention, or care.
His mixing is pristine, as brilliant as Sasha or Digweed, tracks carefully thought out, and is a fucking amazing live DJ. I've never been disappointed by one M.I.K.E. performance. And so he made one annoying tune in the last five years, you can't discredit him. But to answer your question, I'd say since July-August of 2005 he started playing prog/electro house/tech-house/techno/tech trance. This is not uncommon at all. Like I said again, he's being doing this for years, people just didn't pay attention and assumed he played the same stuff as his popular productions. He's made everything from techno/tech-house/electro + electro house/prog house + prog trance/RnB/vocal, uplifting, epic trance/tech-trance/gabber/hardcore/chillout/fucking everything from blue grass to your mom's favorite swing music. M.I.K.E. simply put - is a musical genius.
M.I.K.E. is also a huge techno/electro/prog fan too... a lot of influences in which you can hear in his productions. He also owns a big IDM collection at home.

On the contrary, my fellow countryman
I've intensively followed M.I.K.E. since the late nineties, and even then there was already a big gap between Mike as a producer and Mike as a dj. Especially during events where he had absolute freedom to play whatever he wanted, he stayed far away from trance. The first time I saw him live was back in 2002, where he played at Brussels Is Burning. I was expecting a set filled with his trademark trancesound, but great was my surprise when he played a set filled with techno, progressive, house and even some electro. Way before the latter styles became bandwagonmaterial. In fact, you should check the first Push full album from back in 1999, From Beyond. Track 1 is aptly titled "Electro Fever", and show sthat Mike was already years ahead of the bandwagonhopping trancepack, incorporating elements of techno, electro, progressive and even house in his productions. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of those non-trance productions, and therefore feel there's a big gap between Mike as a dj, and Mike as a producer. While in fact there isn't one as far as Mike's concerned.
And in the past, Mike was sometimes more or less forced to play more tranzy sets, as it were the glory days of trance, and Mike got tagged with the label "trance". People expected him to play trance, so there was little room (although some, which he always used to play more progressive and techy records) to showcase the other styles he'd also love to play. But the last few years the popularity of trance has decreased, and other genres are rapidly filling up the void, including the techno/house/electro sound that Mike has always supported. There's no reason anymore for him to stick to the trancelabel and all that comes with it, as the scene is now ready for his more eclectic sets and productions. The latter might be a bit disappointing, but his sets are always very well structured and mixed, and his trackselection is quite good and unique as well. And in his livesets and radioshows he still plays the occasional trance record and selfmade trance classic. So it's not like he's completely banning trance...
So Mike playing house/electro/techno isn't a new gimmick, let alone bandwagonhopping. It's been a constant in his entire career as a producer and dj, long before other trancejocks started trying out new styles. Only the past 2 years it's become more apparent and visible to the public as it's slowly taking over the tranzy elements in his sets.
So basically a +1 to Ref's post as well
