I wasn't there the night Mauro Picotto played @ AHP, but I heard it was unfuckingbelievable. That was back then, when AHP was good.
But now, it's a fucking circus act. I don't think they have AHP every weekend (thank the lord), but whenever they do, it's SUCH A BUZZ KILL.
For example, about a year ago, James Holden was playing @ Avalon. Everyone was enjoying his set, next thing u know, they put down these curtains on the main stage for like 10 minutes. When they finally opened the curtains, James Holden was gone, and they had this circus act going on with transvestite dancers and TERRIBLE music (probably Steve Crapo or TJ Hoban "DTJ"). This was around 3:30am approximately. Not only that, but the crowd was a bunch of juice heads walking around without shirts, and women who looked like men, and even more noticable washing machines than before.
This happened ALL the time... they would kick off the main DJ to put on their circus act. Why people actually get to Avalon at 3am to go to AHP and miss the main DJ? I have no idea.
Thank god Giant moved to Vangaurd, which reduces the chance of AHP ruining the end of the main DJ's set.
I've only been going to Avalon now if the DJ is worth it (ie Mr. C & Booka Shade... Droog/Droid & Josh Wink), and luckily, they haven't been AHP nights. |
I couldn't agree with you more Julia!
All of that bizarre stuff still happens today. Just a couple weeks a go I photographed Junkie XL & Nick Warren there and when freak hour came around so did the curtains!
The Legend Nick Warren was being replaced on the decks by Freak Castro! Everytime I've been unlucky enough to be caught at one of their events it's like re-run episode. Same stuff over and over, kinda like the twlight zone!
Anyways from what I heard their contract with Avalon is almost up and that could be the end of them at Avalon.
btw: that night when Cox was at Spundae and Picotto at AHP. Yeah you guessed it I was at TIESTO. At that time Giant was at the Hollywood Atheltic Club. It was packed like sardines, only time I ever dehydrated in a club.

the good ole ahp nights/days (before avalon). there was definately a guilty pleasure to it. maybe because of the hours of it more than the venue, but now that i look back the venue that AHP transformed into was fairly raunchy, a circus of sorts. Usually we ended up chillin the last couple hours in the upstairs open sky area, they had some good music up there most of the time, congo/bongo players included on some nites. Some food afterwords and driving home looking at the world...what a crazy world we live in, and then straight to work.
