That's a good point, I haven't played a game that had the exact same shelter options. However, in just about every first person shooter, shelter is extremely important. In games like Counter Strike it could be said to be more advanced in that you can move the environment (barrels) around as well as shoot through certain types of objects.

But for sure GoWs shelter system was frigging sweet and I can't think of one game with a system like it. The closest would be Splinter Cell / GRAW / Rainbow Six where you press a button to crouch behind a barrier or go flat against a wall.

The story is better than most 1st person shooter's, the graphics are okay, the mechanics are solid enough I guess - but none of the Halos have done anything new and haven't even done that much really well. I mean, Gears of War didn't bring anything new to the table, but it did just about everything really, really well - I can understand its popularity.

So without any innovation or revolution in terms of game playing, why does Halo seem to garner more attention than any other 1st person shooter? I can't attribute *all* its success to Microsoft's / Bungie's marketing machine.

Simple: multiplayer

It all started with Halo 1 and its system link option. Teenagers and college students would go outta there way to bring over multiple TV's and multiple Xbox's to get together a nice 16 player battle.

Connecting a dozen or so PC's via LAN is NOT popular amongst casual gamers due to the expensive PC equipment. On the other hand, a 300 dollar Xbox isnt all that much to ask. Also, split screen gaming RULES in a casual atmosphere.

The sheer fact that the person you just head shotted is sitting right next to you only adds to the fun. No other, and I mean NO other console FPS could create such a fascinating and adrenaline-rushing multiplayer experience as Halo. Add in the fact that the levels were absolutely huge and wide-open when compared to other console FPS's (Perfect Dark, Unreal, Quake, etc, etc, mostly took place in indoor environments, meaning less chance for big-scope battles). The fact that Halo combined massive outdoor environments with kickass vehicles such as Ghosts and tanks only resulted in a very good time.

Halo 2 got huge because of its Xbox Live support.

Halo 3 will be huge once again just because Halo 1 and 2 were huge. Ya see, Halo 1 was a real gem back in 2001, but nowadays there are plenty of alternatives. But back in 01, I cant think of a SINGLE FPS multiplayer game that I would wanna play except Halo. Unreal Tournament and Quake 3, you died too fast. Ghost Recon was too slow. Halo had the "not too fast, not too slow" approach going. Plus, with the rechargeable shield, the difficulty was so that the game was easily accessible to people who werent necessarily good at video games, and yet the game structure still allowed for people to get really, really good.

It's hard to explain. The REAL reason Halo got so big was because of the lack of other good, quality software on the Xbox. If you owned a PS2, chances are your library was different from your friends...If you owned an Xbox, chances are you and everyone you knew owned Halo.

Thanks for that response! I never played Halo or Halo 2 multiplayer when I wasn't wasted off my ass but what you've described there makes perfect sense.

bingo. The single-player game is just 'meh.' On Xbox Live, though, it has nearly infinite replay value. Hell, I'm still playing it now, and they're still updating the online version. Even if it's just a couple maps here and there, it still keeps people coming.

Never liked it. Probably because of my hatred of console FPSs. hl2:dm on the other hand is excellent. <3 the dozens of amazing maps that people make.

Like inconspicuous said, the single player is nothing special. In fact, in MY opinion, the single player is crap. Halo 2's was a little better, but whenever I think of Halo 1 with just 1 player....ewwww. The levels were dull as hell. You had to backtrack in most of them. The objectives were uninteresting. It was usually something like.."get to the top of the first chasm"...then after you did that..the next objective was "get to the top of the second chasm"..and so on. Boring as fuuuuuck. Also I found co-op to be straight up dumb, as long as your partner stayed a little behind, you could run up and do a kamikaze and respawn instantly. No challenge there.

Also, people everywhere claim Halo has "revolutionary A.I." and I lol at that statement every time I hear it. My squad mates are complete dumb fucks, a lot of them dont do anything. And the enemies use the same tactics every time. Some people say that the enemies "learn your moves"...and I say bullshit on that one since I do the same thing every time, and it works just about every time (even on Legendary). Again, Halo 2 improved this drastically, I'm talking Halo 1.

Point is, multiplayer is where its at! I actually enjoy Halo 1 multiplayer better. I didnt really like how they removed health in Halo 2; kinda took away from the strategy of it all. Plus, that pistol in Halo 1 is fuckin badass. My dream is for Bungie/MS to rerelease Halo 1 with full Xbox Live support on Xbox Live Marketplace for 360. It'd be interesting to see if that happens.
